Yes, 24 hour clock is a small improvement, but what we really need is metric time (100000 "seconds" per day). Or maybe we should go for some nice hexadecimal or binary time (65536 "seconds" per day). It's always nice to be able to divide something in half with ease. That's what I've always liked about binary. Yes, I know that it's nice to have other prime factors in a base, but fractions are better, and irrationals are just as irrational anyway.

Annyyyway... that's a bit too much OT. The whole problem with switching anything (even from US to SI units) is the people who don't want to learn.

Also, you can rip deuterium out of it so you can have some nice clean fusion reactions. Of course, Canada will be the ruler of the world once fusion is developed, as it has a lot of heavy water. ;-)

I suggest you read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy (Red, Green, Blue). It covers the (fictional) colonization and terraforming of Mars. In later books, a group called the "Reds" comes around, who are opposed to the terraforming. They see the old environment as something to be respected, and not conquested. It's a great read, and the author covers the topics quite well. I can see how this would be even worse if there is life there already.

I really hope this project succeeds. Congrats to the guys working on GStreamer!

I totally agree. If Apple doesn't fight against Microsoft like this, it will be killed by it. And then all Microsoft has left to fight is Linux and BeOS, which are like easily squishable bugs to it.

To those who don't agree with us: Do you want Microsoft to get complete monopoly or something? Why can't you think in the long term and see that these patents are the only way to stop a beast like Microsoft? Apple is trying to help us here, so don't be so ungrateful.

  8. Virii and instant-on on Motorola Mocks-up MRAM · · Score: 3
Instant-on technologies only worsen the viritic situation. Storing a virus on the harddrive is hardly a problem, as the bootsector is too small for a sizable virus, and Operating Systems vary widely. However, all the virus has to do is find any code that exists in memory and plop itself right in there. It's technically much easier, and every boot, the virus is still there, just as potent. Instant-on memory is like a big bootsector just waiting for abuse.

Now, if you use a decent OS, like Windows, the kernel can have suitable protection mechanisms, such as security through obscurity. In Linux, a virus knows exactly where to put itself, but in Windows, the kernel is like a maze of twisty little functions, all alike. As you can see, if you're gonna use instant-on technology, you should use a suitable OS.

  9. Discrimination? on US Sues Over Genetic Testing for Insurance Claims · · Score: 3
The discrimination laws were imposed because people were making arbitrary distinctions. If it can be scientifically proven that a certain attribute (for example, being male) actually disadvantages a person, why is it so bad to discriminate with reason?

Remember though, that any disadvantage will often have an upside. The "disadvantaged" are actually better in other areas. They shouldn't try to push themselves to where they don't belong. For example, deafness may be an immediate problem, but other senses are dramatically enhanced. In a job where hearing capabilities are not required, a deaf person can work better than a non-deaf person.

We must realize that just as people have mental preferences to certain work, their genes also have preferences.

What's so bad about discrimination? Is it so bad that the government has to restrict your descision about whether to hire/fire an employee? If the employer doesn't want the employee, likely the boss will make the worker's life a living hell, and s/he'll quit anyway. There is no reason for anybody to complain about this kind of stuff.

If you think your boss is a bastard, then don't work for him.
