  1. Re:Prices on AMD Athlon (K7) Ships · · Score: 1

I read that the chips rated at higher clock speeds come from the better part of the silicon wafers (the middle I think). But there is no difference in cost for the manufacturing, so such a dramatic price increase really isn't justified.

  2. Bad name... on K7 Renamed "Athlon" · · Score: 1

IMO Alereon was a far better name. Athlon just doesn't roll off the tongue that easily, and it sounds like the latest athletic shoe. It doesn't sound like a name you would give a computer chip. Pentium is a household name. AMD has some work to do if they want to get past the intel marketing machine, and this name isn't exactly helping.

I know AMD hasn't been very good with marketing in the past (they had SIMD something like 9 months before intel and could hardly get anyone to use it) but this is just horrible. They actually pay people to come up with this crap.

Naming chips by the year number is a bad idea. At least five or six chips rated at different clock speeds come out every year. We would have to call it the AMD Athlon99 650MHz. That just sounds bad.

  3. The old versions will go away... on AOL acquires WinAMP, Spinner, SHOUTcast · · Score: 2

When you say that people can keep using the older versions of software that has gotten worse as a result of its aquisition by a large blood sucking corporation, you are forgetting that the copies eventually dfisappear. I don't think many people keep the archive wwith the installer files after they are done installing software.

After my old drive failed, i had to install all my old software all over again, which meant downloading all the installers again.

I could not find a single public site that had Icq98 on it. I hated the bloated Icq99 client and spent a lot of time in a futile attempt to locate the software. Luckily a friend had the file...

The point in all of this is that eventually we will lose the older, better softweare. Nothing lasts forever.

  5. What caused this... on Doom Causes Kid to Kill · · Score: 1

I think that the real problem was not doom or quake (great games by the way). I play those games and many like them and I never feel compelled to kill my classmates. The child didn't know how to tell simulated violence from what is real.

I don't really believe that these games drove him to kill. What does these things is often some other thing. Perhaps the child was a social outcast. That would explain the constant game playing; it's a very convenient diversion from reality. Then there is usually some sort or trigger event, something that causes the person to snap. This could be anything that upset him, even something seemingly insignificant.

It was simply a case of either an insane child to begin with or some really horrible parenting.

Why not sue the makers of the shotgun too? Weren't they in some indirect way responsible for this child's killing rampage?

On another interesting note, the parents are suing Sony, Nintendo, and Sega. But the games they think are responsible are Doom and Quake. Correct me of I'm wrong but id software makes those games. The reason why id is not a defendant is because id doesn't have anywhere near the amount of money that a company like Sony does. The parents are in this for the money and publicity. They are the lowest form of scum: trying to capitalize on the death of children.

Though I doubt any judge with a brain stem would let these disgruntled parents win, this will still have an impact. Because of some insane child, there will be more rating labels on game boxes. Stores like good old all american Wal-mart are going to be even more anal about their censorship. All this on the assumption that if you are under a certain age, you are too stupid to know where to draw the line between fantasy and reality.

  6. ADSL on Gingrich: No taxes on e-commerce, T1s for all · · Score: 1

Everyone who has posted has had horrible experiences with cable modems, but i have yet to see a single complaint about ADSL.

I am not fortunate enough to have one, as my parents are far too cheap, but several people I know have ADSL lines and they all get about 150KB (yes, kilobytes) when downloading from a good server.

From what I have read, ADSL is not shared the way cable is. It's major limitation is that if the local loop exeeds a certain length, the transfer rates begin to drop drastically. Because of that, it isn't available in my area yet.

I don't think that it is that simple to design a system to play back ancient analog media. Think of the 8track. I have never even seen one in my life time, much less heard one.

In 100 years, I think it would be easier to write an MPEG decoder than to make an 8track player.
