  1. That big! on Motorola Mocks-up MRAM · · Score: 1

256 kbits is 64 kilobytes. Even their 4Mbit chip in 2003 will be still only 500 kbytes.

Eight of those suckers could provide "instant-on" capabilities to my old 486.

  2. If you rob the stagecoach, the town starves. on Ballmer Claims Linux Is Top Threat To MS · · Score: 1

Microsoft is not afraid of Linux itself. They are afraid of all the companies who are supporting linux efforts and open source standards. These companies are spending real money on linux. To get the average guy to use Linux, you have to advertise in mainstream media, and that takes cash.

Microsoft will try cut off the money. Make sure you pat your favorite Linux-related companies on the back! Don't let them fall off the wagon!

  3. Truly elegant on Fox Says Web Bugs = Virus Risk · · Score: 4

Web bugs are real and easily spread for some purposes. I received a chain email that had a funny story about winter. I am forced to use MS outlook, and even in the preview window, the email appeared with all it's cute anitmated gifs. All the gifs were off a remote server. So whoever runs that server has a hit log of everyone this chain letter went to.

Talk about power. Instead of a virus, it's a way to find out the architecture of people's networks. Sure, lots will be blocked by firewalls, but lots won't. There's also the potential to load large images (500k) off a taget website. If the email spreads fast enough, it will be a distributed DOS.

  4. Sneaky on Cryptome Posts Just-Released Tempest Documents · · Score: 3

The document mentions that ability of non-linear circuits to modulate unintended signals.

For instance, suppose you are operating a high powered radar from inside your bunker (whoever the hell you are). While you type at your keyboard, the unshielded keyboard cable broadcasts weak RF signals. In theory, these weak RF signals could get inside the radar's systems, and possibly be modulated and amplified. So your keystokes are broadcast by the radar antenna.

It would be one hell of a job to detect that remotely, but it looks like they are concerned about that kind of stuff. The guys that do that kind of detection work are true hardware hackers.

  5. What about real auctions? on E-Bay Going After Offline Deals · · Score: 3

What's to stop you from approaching a losing bidder in a real auction? I don't want to ring the bell of freedom (since you don't necessarily have rights on commercial sites) but it seems overreaching to tell people what they can't do offline. Of course, it all goes back to people blindly clicking "I accept" on large windy user-licenses that take away your rights.
