    You should really check to see how much memory your application is using and make sure you have enough RAM to cover it.

    If you are going in to swap then use about twice the amount of swap as you have memory and spread the partitions across as many disks/channels as you can.

    BTW, _finally_ found source for the old BSD version of rdist and got it built for Linux. If anyone else is having problems finding this version, i'll stick it on my web pages.

    Does this mean that the Debian rdist is the older BSD rdist which uses -Server option? If so, I've been looking for it everywhere. I'm going to have to try Debian out.

    DG/UX can do this with ease, but is a damn site smoother with it.

    I work with AIX, but wish I worked with DG/UX. :(

    AIX is a royal pain in the arse. My current position is admining a whole bunch of RS6000s and while it's rock solid and quick, it's _DIFFERENT_ to everything else.
    My last job was working on Data General AViiON systems running DG/UX, they are a real pleasure to use and administer, leaves AIX and Solaris in the dust.
    It's a pity Data General's management now have their tongue stuck so far Microsoft's arse.

    Wow... It's taking Microsoft, 4CPU's, 4Gb of RAM, high performance RAID controllers, quad NICs and a team of MS's top software engineers dedicated to tuning the system to beat Linux.

    Who in real life will have this kind of hardware and get that kind of support from Microsoft?

    Boy are Microsoft in trouble! :)

    Why not build hard disc heads the same way we build CPUs?
    Instead of a single head sitting on an arm that has to move back and forth to reach a particular track, why not use chip manufacturing technologies to build "head chips" which have thousands of heads, at least one per track.
    Then transfers will be purely related to rotation speed.

    Cheaper too.

    Spreadsheet has full graphing capability.
    Sound support.
    You can embed all the different types of document in one another (sound, spreadsheets, pictures, graphs etc etc).
    Doesn't fall over when you tap the screen.
    Can run Linux.
    Has LOADS of software.
    Realtime OS.
    Application documents are usually very small.
    Supports 128Mb+ CF disks.
    Built in IRDA.
    And it does all this faster on a 18MHz CPU than WinCE on a 75MHz CPU.

    Oh, yeah... It doesn't crash either...

    Nah, My old SCSI system disks have been flaking out the last week or so; disconnecting from the bus, bad sectors, all sorts of shit. Kernel 2.2.9 just tries to bring it back online, worked too, no panicks or anything.
    They finally died completely last night. Luckily my replacement 9Gb drives arrived this morning. I had hoped to be able to copy my filesystems directly, but had to go to backup. (I need a bigger/faster backup device :( )

    It's not the actual ? character it's printing, it's printing ? as in "unknown character" because the word processor is using a code from within the section marked as unprintable control codes by the ISO standard.
    Just typical MS behaviour really.

    You haven't taken my advice I see. I know exactly what the artistic license is and I know exactly what the GPL is.

    Tell you what, have another go, on me, for free... All you have to do is read the little words one after another to see if you can work out what my point is, look I'm even using short words for you now.

    GPL'd software can also be extended at whim.
