It was an in an KeyNote to some ACM Symposium that K.T. spillt his most notorious hack.
Unfortunately the ASM has stopped putting links of these classic speeches and docs and their site. (I allways find Dijkstras 'gotos considered harmfull' hilarious. The man is so narrow minded B-), but I digress)
What K.T. hat done was to put code in the compile (cc) that a) reinserted itself even if removed from the source code, and b) created a backdoor in the login code when compiled with such compiler, so that (dough, forgot K.T.s fav. login) was on a system even if it was not in the/etc/passwd, including his normal password, so not everybody could come and try the backdoor.
Before I read this I thought all those backdoor stories in Heinlein books or Gibsons Stuff where just urban Myth. But it is real my man.
In theory using S/MIME is not only superior in protocol, but also in user-friendliness because you can buy identification from TC TrustCenter, Thawte or Verisign.
But it is only usable in export controlled MUAs and there is no secure messaging due to limited key length. Now you could use fortify...
As to free support, somebody should sit down and use the OpenSSL tools to write some plug-in for mut, pine or elm. The base is there.
That is the point too it: they will not have to make the changed parts public as well.
It is often said that the GPL is too restricive because of the viral properties, but I guess this situation with M$ and Perl will show us what a more lenient license will produce:
M$ will embrace perl, making nifty additions that only work in the windows version and will follow the letter of the Artistic License by providing very nice links and pointers to the real thing on the following url: http://www.microsoft.com/stuff/msdn/more_stuff/d eeply_nested/tools/perl/true_origin.asp This url will be linked from nowhere but will be handy when the next trial case comes around.
And millions of lusers out there will believe for ever after that M$ VisualPerl was invented by M$ Anno Domini 2000. Ask most people what they think where Basic comes from!
I do not see where he dealt with the social impact!
The story just reinforced my perception of John that he is an american media entity that could not be more stereotypical.
Everything he says is true to a point. IBM has done great by the OpenSource crowd, and has good ideas and longtime trackrecord in creating the most powerfull computers. And the software to make use of this power. And harness the minds of brilliant researchers. Thus they will probably realize all the technical advances they set out to do and will be able to differentiate in the weather forecast between the Bronx and Queens.
But the point is moot! IMHO it is empty 'hail technica', somthing most geeks are prone to do, and I allways whether John caters the crowd or believes that we just need more technical advances to solve all problems.
All this information will be worthless to society as whole. Because most western countries are full of people that are getting more and more depressed with technology. They do not understand it and they resent us geeks for letting them know day after day.
More and more politicians in the western countries use the information given to them for slagging of their opponents, and not to better their countries.
As long there is a continued lack of leadership, all the data will be useless and only serve to make an arbitrary point of somebody in need of an extra couple of millions {Votes|Monetary Units}
Corporare entities are at least honest about the use of any advantage they are given. It's the whole point of their existence to make the most financial gain of any opportunity.
Hmmm.... This is rather political for a./ Diskussion, but we allways must ask ourselv whether we still are in contact with the RealWorld(tm)
read you later. [enter you fav. quote here, I am to lazy]

Just for the sake of completeness:

This exactly stated in the Helloween Docs.
