Just look at the thread before, I get frigthened at this combination, subverting software companies (to s**t at their customers), suppressing free information exchange and forbidding the usage and/or information about tools to check your system appears quite systematic to me.

will the next step be an Internet license and an allow list which information is allowed ?

This seems to be quite usual.

This is nothing for Apples hall of fame, instead of reinventing something similar or trying to show up against software patents they prefer a simle (and maybe even danger) solution.

I always thought Apple was one of the few companies with innovation, thats not the usual philosophy. (I hope someone gets the idea of patenting some Apple-stuff, probably theill notice when they are confronted with the problems)

I can remember a thread a few month ago about the NSA (or a company doing this for the nsa) was/is working on a "Secure Linux" Project which should replace OBSD as a "many plattform OS" for their use. Has anyone heard of this thing since then ?

Im quite sure, that if youd ask the Canadians at the moment, theyd probably prefer OS in the future since they had to learn that one cant trust stuff coming from other countries and/or unknown sources

. (If its really critical stuff, they should do a general code reviewing from diffrent institutions to ensure that they arent installing any kind of backdoors for anyone).

Another thing here is that the Gov cant really regulate or lead the development of the OS as the main development happens far outside of any governemental institution.

It seems as at some consultants were able to learn about it, only I beleive that the Industry will once again have too much pressure to allow an realistc decision about this topic.

    Just keep using it !!

  5. Spam, costs , law and about YOUR network on Spam, ISPs, MAPS And Lawsuits · · Score: 3

Beeing a sysadmin for a company with about 2000 users spam can really be a problem, especially if users start to complain about beeing bothered by spam or demanding to prevent mails like this.
Generally I think one should be able to decide wether he is willing to accept it or not, if I decide not to want spam and therefor Im using MAPS, RBL or other stuff it my decision and if they get forced to remove certain sites from their list, I'll be forced to maintain a manual blocking list also - it will be more work for me but still the same effect. So, if the spamming lists get compromised by legal decisions, it will be time for an "Additional Open Source Spamming List" as an addon.

I personally think that the time for non open sourced Unices for X86 has passed. The only thing that was left from SCO (except some memories) was the name, so I think its much harder to relaunch business using a different brandname... and there are more than enough other good OSses theill have to compete against.

I think this is diffrent from the Napster discussion, as most people I know are not satisfied with mp3 quality so they buy the CDs they like anyway.
This is pure illegal software spreading so you should not wonder about them closing down the sites, this is nothing new ...

  15. Migration via LDAP on Ask Slashdot: NT to Linux Migration Costs? · · Score: 1

Most of you see the problem in migrating the userdata like passwords to linux, but what if you consider of using LDAP to dump the NT-Database to the directoryservice (afaik only the Netscape-directoryserver, which is currently in betastade for Linux knows how to do this - please let me know if this is not the case).
Then you could use the directory to authenticate your *x hosts (and therefore your samba-server) via NIS against it.

The directory could be managed from a database (probably a HR or a customer database).

But I have got no idea how the MS-Maildata (I think you are talking about MS-Exchange) could be converted ... and to what ? local mailfolders ? I'd be pleased about answers ...

Also the argument about ACLs is quite strong for a comany or could it be done via smb.conf ? (does sambs speak LDAP ? you could also manage your acls via the same database)
