Isaac Asimov is also my favourite, but I don't think he is under-appreciated. The 3 laws of robotics has been quoted in quite a few movies and he is well known in scientific circles as well, especially astronomy and of course robotics.
One of my new favourites would definitely have to be Alistair Reynolds. I picked up one of his books at random at the library, and could not put it down until breakfast the next day, when it was done.
