CD was sized to fit in a suit pocket? that sounds silly at best. i'd like to see the design documents on that choice! might as well show me a unicorn too while you're at it. who puts CDs in suit pockets? that's like saying the 3.5"floppy was designed to be able to fit into a pb&j sandwich.

    this is exquisite bs. a new iphone costs $200 with contract, the same as (or less than) new premium android phones like the Galaxy. There are also models at the $100 price point and free with contract. How can you call it an overpriced luxury good? This is a tired meme that used to be true 5 years ago. Also, sorry, iPad is 90% of the market with no challengers on the horizon, and ipad mini will eat nex7's lunch.

    Example of commodities of scale. Shipping container = 20 tons. Mining operation capacity = 100 million tons. I one day you could mine as much ore as would be 5 million shipping containers. To understand that number, a reasonably busy sea port will handle 1 million containers in a year.

    omg, here we go, are the rules of language descriptive or proscriptive? can't have a day on slashdot without this conversation. if you want to have an informed discussion on race, you might as well use accurate terms. just cause these subjects are mangled by some people, doesn't mean that we can't aim for a higher standard. hint: the people who don't care about hispanic != latino are usually tea partiers who assume all brown people are either "hispanic" or "arab" and should gtfo!! fyi arab != muslim != persian. This distinction has enormous implications for foreign policy, and needs to be made.

    i'm not sure if you're trying to be snarky or not, but umm... yes, that's a good solution. to the extent that we can disaggregate the landfills into different piles, the better. bonus points if the landfills are in africa.

    Yeah but you can go to your indium mine and extract 100 million tons of ore tomorrow. As opposed to monitors, where you need to collect each monitor and ship it to whatever processing plant on palates. Much worse economies of scale!

    i like this line of thinking a lot, although I see it slightly differently... if hacking into an iphone were nontrivial, then you'd have dozens of posts on this thread reading "hacking into an iphone can be done! see these links! frist post!" if slashdotters do not erupt in indignation to something, then it must be true.

    So they buy phones from Apple, Motorola, HTC, Samsung, etc. based on a percentage of the MSRP. A fairly small percentage.

    Umm, I'm not sure this is true. If you look at the docs that came out of the Samsung trial, apple has sold all of its iphones with an average selling price of ~$580. Obviously the bulk of the phones go through carriers rather than direct to consumers. This says to me that the carriers are paying full price.

    sounds like you're describing iCloud - connects iphones, ipads, ipods, and mac desktops. works exactly as you describe for music, photos, and all apps that make use of icloud. I agree, it's pretty cool!

    No, you don't need it. If you email yourself a copy of the ppt, you can open it directly in keynote from the mail app. Don't need to do any conversions to the file itself.

    1) the keynote app on the ipad can directly open up ppts. there's no "conversion software" step. 2) you would only use the ipad to present, not to make any changes, so you dont need to worry about conversions back and forth. 3) true you want to take a look to make sure things converted correctly, but this could be accomplished, by you know looking at the slides? doesn't sound like too much work. 4) you're the biggest douchebag I've met on slashdot today.

    Since the Android phones are more profitable and more plentiful to the carrier, carriers will eventually say "meh."

    this is total bs. fact is, people switch carriers to get the iphone, and they stay at carriers because they have an iphone. most androids are bottom of the barrel POS that you get for $20 with activation. this is not profitable or enticing.

    let me guess - you 1) have an android phone, 2) are a total dork in your mom's basement, and 3) proud of both.
