  1. If you really want to understand what it was like for Vasco da Gama to voyage across the sea, you need a wooden ship, a cloth sail, and a couple years. Of *course* learning by doing is preferred. But we've agreed, out of necessity, that learning by reading is the next best thing. And digital text books improve the reading experience in every way. Mark Twain said "A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way." But he wasn't suggesting it.

  2. Here's the problem on Space is Full of Dirty, Toxic Grease, Scientists Reveal (theguardian.com) · · Score: 2

"The Australian-Turkish team discovered more than expected: 10 billion trillion trillion tonnes of gloop"
    In what volume?

"or enough for 40 trillion trillion trillion packs of butter"
This might be intended to help me visualize the problem. It does not do that.

  3. Hooray! on Large Island Declared Rat-Free in Biggest Removal Success (nationalgeographic.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

We introduced an invasive species and then destroyed them again at some cost to the environment. I hope it's clear that the villain in this story was not the rats.

  4. Hulu is struggling to keep users on Hulu Lowers Prices After Netflix Raises Theirs (variety.com) · · Score: 1

As others have said, Hulu is offering promotional prices to mitigate losses after an enormous interface blunder. Hulu split their content flagging into 2 systems, Watchlist and MyStuff. But the two systems don't talk to each. The result is that users can "save" shows via the web, but they can't see those shows on their Roku. The same is true in the other direction. Thousands of folks are going to their Roku's, discovering that the interface is new, clunky, and all of their shows and content are missing. These price changes are a mitigation to avoid large subscription losses.

  5. This must be a test of humanity by alien intellect on Ask Slashdot: What Are the Best Games To Have In Your Collection? · · Score: 1
@RailGunner has a good list. I might replace Final Fantasy 9 with Final Fantasy 3 or 5, but the Zeldas, Metroid, and Castlevanias that he mentions are strong choices.

And I'll agree with others that Mario Kart is a good choice. I was always partial to the older Battle Mode part of the game. I think that will serve you well in your interstellar travels.

Let me add Pikmin3 to round out the list. It's beautiful and intelligent and endlessly playable. I'm sure your machines can design algorithms to solve some of the levels, but the zen of it is to play until the ancient parts of your brain kick in and guide you to the right solution.

I hope humanity passes the test. But if not, could you take me to live in the intergalactic zoo?
