Like maybe finding a way to avoid needing to sterilise it between uses?
I can't seem to find any footage from Star Trek where a doctor or nurse cleans one between uses, sometimes even swapping one cartridge of medicine for another, which usually causes mixing of any residual fluids.

This would surely be a godsend to anyone with a phobia of sharp objects, like hypodermic needles.
