  1. Re:Their missing the bennefits of GPL on Corel Sticking to Closed Source Beta Test? · · Score: 1
The major point that Corel has made in the introduction of their distrobution is that they are marketing this software toward the inexperienced Unix user. Their intent is to have an installation that is foolproof, and solid from the start. They are not necessarily trying to "steal" RedHat users for their own distribution. If Corel does what it hopes it's software will help them do, it will do M$ much more harm than it would RedHat. This product is all about sweet revenge. I've watched my Corel stock more do some great things in the past 8 months, and I'm pretty excited about their progress. We should all be cheering them on as they do their good work to bring Linux to more of the world (they are taking aim at the global educational institutions with this product as well)

I personally use RedHat because I haven't had the time to experiment much with variants, but I might try Corel if it's a good distro. I am looking forward to seeing Draw 9 on Linux though. It's never too late to start something new. Look at Google for instance...did we really need another search engine? Now I don't use anything else, because it's a better program.

  2. High Bandwidth apps on Microsoft Joins Internet2 Coalition · · Score: 1

The concern that I have about this move is that the applications yet to be developed to utilize such an increase in flexibility will primarily come from Redmond. I have to assume that the institutions involved are doing some of this, but what about the commercial market? It is certainly good that Microsoft would start to develope this stuff, but there are long term concerns to be dealt with.
One major concern that I have is that if Microsoft is the only major investor in high-bandwidth apps, and they are only concerned with putting out a product with a pretty box, who's to stop them from making breaking with standards and creating sloppy programs that take up loads of unnecessary bandwidth. If we're voting, I would prefer that a standards committee make these important decissions, not Microsoft. It's could be a short walk to I3...

  3. Have you tried Wine? on Linux Software for Digital Cameras? · · Score: 1

I have a Ricoh RDC-300Z, which comes with some software called "Photo Studio Lite", and it will open in Wine, but did not seem to funcion properly. This may have to do with com ports, because the error message that it kept giving me was one that I received when I first set it up in NT. I also tried to get AutoCAD R14 to funcion in Wine, and had no luck, so I had written off both of these programs in Wine. If others have had better luck, I am interested in hearing about it.
