"When I got my first car I used to listen for them deploying speed traps. Scanners were very handy back then." So in other words you used scanners to help you break the law? Kind of makes the point for the police right their doesn't it? Actually this is a very common use of scanners by truckers. Some states have forbidden the use of scanners in moving vehicles because of that.
And that is why I didn't like Biology. Maybe the term individual is just illogical when talking about plants. So maybe that means that plants are less abile to adapt to changes in environment but maybe they are more abile to endure changes in the environment? After all very few animals can recover from being chopped into pieces except some lik starfish and some flat worms.
Okay I can see that if they grow by runners. I was thinking they produced seeds asexually too make "clones". If somehow the roots or runners where cut then do they become two individuals? If so then does that mean that for some plants the distinction is just mechanical in nature and not genetic? I would also assume that they would tend to evolve more slowly than other organisms since their only mechanisms for change are transcription errors in the cloning process. Sorry if my questions seem a bit dim. Out of all the sciences I took biology was my least favorite.
So are they the same plant or not? If a clone has a mutation or a transcription error is it really the same plant? Or did they have no transcription errors?
There is another option as well for the ARM port. OS/X server and or a new SAN/NAS device. Apple no longer has an end to end solution for corporations. With more and more people moving to IOS and OS/X devices it may be time to get back into at least part of that space. Maybe not the heavy lifting Database and or web servers but storage and possibly even an Exchange competitor.
You can have more than 2/4GB of space with a 32 bit cpu. The limit is on per process. I am also into flight sims and they do tend to fit that category. Lightroom/photoshop. You bet.
Now the idea that their is no reason to not run a 64 bit version of the app... If the App will never need the memory space I disagree. Your GTalk client will never need that much space. Your word processor hopefully will never need that much memory. If it does then bloat has gotten out of hand. Now on X86 things are different. In the 32 bit mode you are register starved so running in 64 bit mode gives you an advantage even with smaller memory usage programes. That is not an issue with ARM.
Is 64 bit the way of the future. Yes. IS not having it today I big deal. Not for many applications including a lot of desktop and server applications.
Now what I would like to see Intel do is create a new Mobile Atom that ditches all the kruft and uses the 64 ISA as a template for a new 8, 16, 32 bit modes.
I was about to say the same thing. There is no way that I can imagine that two lines of code would be substantial enough to cause a work to become a derivative work.
Sony is not doing this project the summary was wrong. From the FAQ on the project.
"Q. Tim Bird, the proposer of this project, works for Sony. Is this a Sony project? A. No. Although Tim is employed by Sony, he spends a portion of his employed time working on behalf of the embedded industry to improve Linux and encourage GPL compliance. As of February 2, 2012, Sony has not endorsed or agreed to support this project. This wiki page is for gathering information and project description information, to present to various companies to solicit support and resources for the project."
It reason is that it seems that the authors of BusyBox are very willing to go after companies and sometimes ask for remedies outside the scope of compliance with the GPL. At least that is what they are claiming.
The error is that even assembly line workers are paid to think. Many times they catch errors and better solutions for assembly issues. In this case the issues was that the engineer created a solution that makes a human factors error just about a sure thing. Oh and any arguments about things like weight and other restrictions on aircraft is a bit silly. This was on an F-86 no some low production research aircraft. It was designed to be built in large numbers. Now yes the person putting the bolt in should have asked his superviser BTW in the story I read it was a he that put in the bolt. But the superviser might have said,"Just put it in the way way you always do. I am sure that it will not make a difference." Or they may have even taken it to a production engineer and he might have not seen any reason to not put it in the standard way.
For many tasks 64 bit is over rated. Unless you are doing something that needs a HUGE memory space and or 64 bit ints 64 bit code takes up more room and is slower than 32 bit code... If the ISA isn't brain dead and starved for GP registers in 32 bit mode.
"The problem with ARM is there are literally millions of x86 programs that have become an integral part of peoples lives" Not really. There are many ARM programs that have become and integral part of people lives. Android and IOS are two big example not to mention the apps that run on them. Software is not as locked to an ISA as it once was. Microsoft and Apple have shown that with the move of Windows to ARM and the move of OS/X to x86. Applications are not written in assembly anymore they are written in C++ or another high level language. Take your example of Photoshop? Moving Photoshop from Windows to Windows on ARM is probably a much simpler project a Windows and OS/X version. The same is true of Office.
I do think that AMDs Fusion is interesting but your reasoning on why people will keep use the x86 is not valid. They will only keep using x86 for as long as that is the best solution. IMHO x86 is endanger of being the next PDP-11 or VAX unless it can scale down to mobile and fast.
Yes the Slashdot summary was written by and idiot. The line " smooth bore rife" should be more than enough to show that both the editor that approved the summary and the author should not be allowed to post anything on slashdot again.
There is another reason for this bomb that people are missing. The US already has a bomb that can take out that target. The problem is that it is nuclear. The US wants a none nuclear way to deal with that kind of target. Even if Iran is dumb enough to start threatening to use nuclear weapons the US and most of the world would like to have a none nuclear option. Lets say that Iran does decide to use a nuke and it gets shot down before taking out the target. The US would rather use a none nuclear counter strike. If Iran actually hit a target with a nuke then the end result would be bad.
I did. I think that article was targeted to be inflammatory and manipulative. The linked story doesn't give me close to enough information to form an opinion on the merits of the project. So here is what I think about the DARPA program. If it is a robotics challenge like the self driving car I am fine with it. In fact I think it is a great idea. If the projects are how to make a kill bot then I think it is a bad idea. Without more information about the project I can not tell but odds are really good that it going to be a simple robotics challenge.
However the clear slant and manipulation of people with this are other slashdot articles is deeply disappointing and frankly disturbing. What is more disturbing is the success they have with it. Notice how hostile you have gotten at me even questioning the bias of the story. You have even resulted to personal and emotional attacks and in your last post are demanding to know "Where I stand". I stand for truth and unbiased information. That is why I hate 90% of what I hear of fox news and frankly I am getting to that point with slashdot. I don't like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, or Michel Moore because they are all liars and manipulators that feel that they must inform us on how we should feel about the information as well as present it. They are all negative influences on a free society. So that is it I want the crap cut and the information given and not slanted!
I said high end. Single core 1 Ghz snapdragon, 3.8" screen, only 720p recording and then at a pretty low frame rate, and no WiMax. As to what an iPhone 4S can do that this one can not. HD video recording, better camera, much faster CPU, more games and apps, supports GSM for travel outside the US.
Heck even my old HTC Evo 4G has wiMax the same CPU, and a bigger screen and that phone is no longer being sold or if it is I think it is now free. No good high end WP7 phones are available in the US, your reply only goes to reinforce that statement.
Just a pair of wire cutters. Well unless they are going to pay for satellite link but then they will have to find someone willing to sell them satellite service. I guess they could do TCP/IP over HF but that will be slow..
No the professor was right. There is a benefit to putting in the bolts the way the worker was taught to do it. It is also the standard way. And the class came up with a number of solutions that would have been better than the upside down bolt.
You should always make assembly errors as unlikely as possible. Having a design that will fail if a single bolt is installed in that standard way vs a special procedure is just asking for trouble. Doing when other solutions are available is a fail.
It would cost 25 million to repair or more but. 1. The E8s where built using old 707s. To save money they used old retired airliners 707-300s not the KC-135 mentioned on an other post. The KC-135 and 707 are closely related but the 707 has a different fuselage among other things. So they may not have the spares available. 2. The E8 only has 13 more years in service give or take. They are one of the aircraft that the Global hawk may end up replacing. So it may not be worth the money to replace this one aircraft. They will use it for spares to keep the rest in the air and just replace it first.
Simple reason for that. There are no really good high end WP7 phones for sale in the US. The best one right now is probably the Nokia Lumia 710 from TMobile. Verizon has spent a lot of money on the whole Droid campaign and has the Droid Razor, Droid Razor Maxx, and the new Galaxy Nexus not to mention the iPhone 4s. Sprint Has the Epic Touch and iPhone 4s. Wow you are so self confused. The world is not back and white, yet you clearly see it that way. Children are being used to create weapons directly or indirectly? Really? and this. "I am against war and against violence of any kind. For me is this story a red flag. It's your right to think otherwise..."
The fact you can not see the manipulation is really sad and yet again you throw up an emotional appel. I have never said I am for or not for this program. I never said that I as for war or violence or not. I simply pointed out facts it is you that is dealing with fear and emotion not I nd those are the tools of the tyrant and dictator.
"When I got my first car I used to listen for them deploying speed traps. Scanners were very handy back then."

Star Trek dead?
I bet the author of that post lives in the evil bearded universe.
Star Trek seems alive and well here.
It is pretty bad but are all the sites that use CMSs and all look more or less like WordPress really any better?

Pedantic? I don't think so this is just exactly wrong. Not to mention that you never specify the size of a projectile by length.
No problem. I wasn't offended as much as frustrated so no offense was taken.

Yea that is what I thought. .223 or a 5.56mm round. .30 cal is 7.62mm
An M-16 is a
Your typical
The cannon on the A-10 is 30mm.
This is 10 cm! that is 100mm!
The cannon on the the Tiger tank from WWII was only 88mm!
And guided shells are not even new

BTW Smooth bore rifle? That is a Jumbo Shrimp folks. You can not have a smooth bore rife!
