This is the same old thinteligent idea.... blame the manufacturer. same thing as blame society who made (manufactured) these people murderers and rapists. blame the gun maker because this derranged lunatic got ahold of a pistol he stole from his parents.
What we need to do is a threefold plan of action. Yes we blame the perp. they most likely knew they were trying something to circumvent the system. Yes we blame the manufacturer. There comes a point where things are too easy to misuse. Yes we blame the victim. Yes YOU DO NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF!!! no this doesnt mean we all go get guns and carry. but we may want to consider some pepper spray or god help us a firewall.....
back in college a prof of mine told us about the first computer he ever worked on in the navy... a univac serial number 000002... after the navy retired it it went to the smithsonian institute.
interesting side note, it still used liquid mercury for memory allocation, it had to be placed on an insulated floor and you had to step lightly while in the same room as it
the prebuilt, guarenteed water cooling case reviewed here (the address is http://hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/koolance/ for the goat weary) is strongly suggested, it seems to be the best way of doing it, by getting the loudest parts of the case cooled by a simpler, quieter, cooler solution....
I had to make sure that it wasn't one of my co-workers posting this question first, its very similar to my companies current situation. We invested in a software package called Visual Audit Pro from Vision Soft www.visionsoft.com... seems to be a decent program that can run at given intervals, and collects varying amounts of data (you can ask it to take more or less). seems to run well enough for us, but doesn't offer a *nix solution
[quote]And before you start saying "Well this is the internet, it's different". People that use Napster sometimes say say that you can trade music in real life, why should it be different over the internet... You can't have it both ways.

so now you are suggesting (at least this is what i read into it) that we can't have it either way
is that what the world really wants? a simple pad to activate your apps, a disk (cartridge) for a simple install and no real flexability? I can see my grandma or mother using it, but me, my father, my sisters, or really anyone whos not "afraid" of that off white box would disregard it as another applience. I really hope this is not the future of computers.
Not much of a question really. When you think about what is required to crack a box, buffer overflows, root kits, etc... If you cloak your machine then yes you are afforded a bit more protection, but it is better to combine cloaking with a locked down system. My personal suggestion is to monitor some of the IRC channels frequented by Hax0rs and keep current on what it is they are attempting.
