  1. Have you considered SMS? on Satellite Email via GPS? · · Score: 1

Short Message Service messaging is cheap (if not outright free), reliable and compatible with email. Most new phones allow you to send SMS messages to email addresses and not just phone numbers, while you can use the phone companies email to SMS gateways to send email to the handset. Sure there is a character limit (about 250 chars) but for decades people did more with much, much less ("Thnk tlgrph. Stp."). Worst case, send a few messages.

    Hope the suggestion helps.

  2. You will choke on IPSec on Can IP Masquerading Handle L2TP Connections? · · Score: 3

In order to provide encryption and authentication with L2TP, IPSec is used. Unlike PPTP which encrypts the packet and then encapsulates the ppp payload inside another layer of tcp/ip headers, L2TP relies on IPSec to encrypt the layer 2 payload and wraps it in TCP/IP headers. The problem is that the WHOLE packet is checksummed (including both TCP and IP headers.) What that means is that if you NAT the packet, the packet will be rewritten, the checksum will fail, and the packet will be dropped on the other side of the tunnel.

  3. Potential use... on Net Access From your TI-85 · · Score: 1

While I value the hackness of such software, I do wonder what potential use this may serve. There is a low end hardware limit to potentially usefull hardware/software platforms. For me that low end limit is a Palm V with an OmniSky Minstrel 19.2 Wireless IP modem...

Correct me if I am wrong, but since HAL was brought online on January 12th, wouldn't Windows 98 not be available for another 6 month at least(If I remember this correctly, Windows 98 came out late june of '97)

It was Quake I that was open sourced for the record... And the "cheats," were really exploits of performance hacks that are the direct result of backwards thinking when it comes time to open up the client to modifications... Security V.S. Performance has been an age long tradeoff...
