I don't understand where the mac price/performance figures are coming from. Last time I checked, the cheapest I could get a dual Mac G5 2.0GHz from the apple store, I ended up wiht a $2,770 price tag. From Dell, I can get nearly the exact same setup (slightly smaller HD, but it's SCSI) with a dual Xeon 2.4GHz for $2,396. That means that every dual G5 2.0 is 1.156 times as expensive as a comparable dual Xeon 2.4.
That means a 2200 processor cluster of G5's costs $3,047,000. For that money you could get a 2543 process cluster of Xeon 2.4's, which would easily beat the mac cluster based on extrapolation of the supercomputer ranking data.
My guess would be that even though it's listed under the MP3 category, it's really being blocked to keep people from working on their Open Source projects while at work. "The Man" most likely doesn't want to pay for your OSS work.
So I see the Itanium 64-bit processor mentioned throughout but no mention of the AMD Opteron/Sledgehammer. Is this just because that chip isn't on the market yet, so once it is, HP/Compaq will make an announcement; or are they just not planning on using it? Also, there is no mention of AMD in the personal computer section either. If HP/Compaq switches to all Intel computers, then is AMD finished? Dell refuses to use the AMD processors, I don't see an AMD based offering from IBM, Gateway looks like they're on the way out, so HP/Compaq is really the only "major" computer manufacturer that uses AMD chips. If they were to become Intel only, would that be the beginning of the end for AMD (by end I don't mean completely phased out, but woudl they become more like Apple, commanding a very very small percentage of market share?)
Yeah, the site provider CQhost.com (don't ever go there) is providing really bad service in our time of need:o) It should be back up tomorrow (hopefully). Again, the link is roa ch article Hope you comeback to visit us. Thanx L8r
