  1. Fun to be violent on Software to Predict "Troubled Youths" · · Score: 1

How many of you, when you were young, had some sort of non-graded test given to you in school for the purpose of compiling information on average students? How many of you tried as hard as you could to make it look like you were completely nuts and something to worry about? I'm sure there are a number of you... and even more who aren't likely to read Slashdot.

My point is, violence is such a revered thing via video games, tv, and general school-age social structure, that the results are surely going to be wildly inaccurate.

"I scored a 87! That's just short of serial killer! What'd you get?"

There is also a large social layer of the schools... students who act violent, who use it to scare people and to be pseudo-antisocial, yet would never really do anything significantly violent. I've known a few.

The real people to worry about are the students who will see right through these tests and give them what they want to hear: that they are normal, patriotic, god-fearing citizens.

But hey, at least they're trying, right?

  2. People getting it right. on Uncle Robin's Advice for Lovelorn Geeks · · Score: 1

It's good to see people finally getting this sort of thing right. I didn't for most of high school, but now that I'm in college, I've got the best girlfriend I could concievably have. For the first time in my life it wasn't another case of me pestering a girl until she dated me, but instead... This girl, this woman was attracted to me from the very start. I must admit that I little noticed her in the beginning, but eventually, I began realising what a wonderful person this shy little girl was. Even then, I could never have guessed how passionate this shy girl can be.
What can I say? I'm in love.

Why can't it continue? Companies are making buckets of money off us already. Why do you think there are so many ISPs now? It's just big businesses wanting to make more money without doing more.
It seems to be the new internet mentality. I see it everywhere now. In spam, there are promises to make money without doing anything, there are domain and patent squatters, thousands of porn sites that charge you to view pictures that were downloaded by them for free... the list goes on.

The new internet economy is dazzling with the promise of money for nothing. And many people get very rich this way.

    Is it right?

  4. Re:Patents. Woo. on Trend: More Software Patents · · Score: 1

Well, It does help someone. It helps the companies with the patents. It's an attempt to make sure that nobody else can make money the same way you do. It's more anti-competitive thinking. Just more microsoft-like thinking. The computer business would move much faster if people would spend less time defending rights to technology that doesn't yet exist.

Its the same thinking as Domain name squatting. Patent squatting is just an annoying way of making money for not doing anything other than getting to it first.

There is a bigger difference than you think. One can have a tremendous ego without being power-hungry. He just thinks he already has all the power, not because he's been grasping and clawing for it, but because he's just that good.

Again, that's just what he seems to think. The truth of the matter is, he's too powerful, and he's dangerous to America's economy. No one person should have so much wealth or power.
    Nobody.

I have a feeling Visa didn't realise what such a business venture would do to them. Such a large company would have a lot of trouble keeping track of state laws, etc. I agree that credit cards shouldn't be used for gambling, nor should credit card companies promote this... But I don't like credit cards anyway.

    They scare me.
People who can't spend responsibly tend to be the people they target most when trying to gain new debtors. As a college student, I will sometimes get 3 calls in a night from people trying (and putting a LOT of pressure on) to sell me on a credit card. College students are famous for going crazy on credit cards. The machines in Vegas for getting cash from a credit card is just another example.
    It's a dirty business.
