Morale on capitol hill has been low since the end of the cold war. Damn hard to bomb who you want when you want without the "anti-communist" cover.
Wars are very convenient for boosting profits and keeping the public in check. If no other country is willing to stand up and be the big aggressive asshole, then it will just have to be the US.

More accurately, they've been fucking each other. Kossovo used to be nearly 50% Serbian. Since the 1980's, that Serbian population has been uh, dealt with by ethnic Albanians.
The KLA is also nearly 100% an American creation. Those are US-supplied arms they're using, and there have been artocities on BOTH sides, not just Milosevic.
Oh, and the "genocide" is 2000 dead Kossovars, nearly all KLA and combatants, not helpless civilians like CNN tells you they are.

If you mean these last few conflicts have been nearly 100% propaganda on both sides, I'd say I agree.
In Vietnam, the reporting was at least in part impartial, with (admittedly inflated) body counts showing in the corner of the screen. The fighting being shown was real too.
In the gulf and now in Serbia, actual numbers are hidden, and the "conflicts" are staged. Serbia is blowing up it's own houses for the benifit of TV crews, and NATO is doing the same. In the Bosnia affair, we had Croats shell their own buildings and beaches for the benefit of Western TV crews.
In the gulf, the viewing public was treated only to grainy images of the miraculous accuracy of our "smart bombs". No mention of the 750,000 Iraqi casualties.

Gah! This most recent season of the Simpsons has been so bad. Did Matt steal away all the good writers to work on Futurama?
Lisa's character has changed from the show's confused manifestation of Matt himself into some fruity new-age stereotype. Homer is just stupid anymore in very predictable ways. I can hardly bring myself to watch it anymore. I hope Matt stays on the Futurama project a lot longer than he stuck with the Simpsons.

The food processing system is massively parallel, and an entirely independent process. The actual initial intake requires a fairly high priority, but afterwards consumes very little in the way of system resources. Unless you have some kind of a buffer overflow during the process (which is non-fatal), you should notice absolutely no degradation in overall performance during the subsequent processing.
What you term "waste disposal" is really no such thing. What you are doing is making a system backup in the event something in the overall system becomes corrupt. Don't ask about the restore process, it's ugly.
Someday you need to check out the ammount of crap you have sitting around in/dev/null. Then you'll appreciate just how efficient the human body really is.

Awesome game though. Kicks Alpha Centauri's ass as far as fun features and replay value. The clerics, lawyers, and corporate franchise units are a real kick in the pants.:-)

And a lot more different reasons can make someone collaborate with the authors to improve a program, because it's fun, because it's cool, because have nothing to do on sundays, and none of the reasons above are related to money.
So what you're saying is that you're an unpaid volonteer.

It's easy to bag on something because it isn't what you're used to, or not exactly what you want it to be. Fact is that Linux, like life, is exactly what you make of it.

I don't think free software will stay in the hands of purely unpaid volonteers forever. When the model becomes universally accepted by all, it will gravitiate to some sort of institution or another. The possibilities (in reverse order of preference) are:
Development will be concentrated in companies like RedHat (with dubious motives),
Universities, taking on the character of other kinds of research, or
The government. (Which may not so be as bad as it sounds.) Ideally, I think writing (good) software should be recognized for what it truly is: an art form. Hence it should get federal funding like PBS, NPR, and the NEA.
National Endowment for Free Software anyone?

I bought onea them Creative PC-DVD players (don't bother). Movies are win9x ONLY. I think if we want to be able to take over the desktop market, this needs to be looked into. (Not just creative but any DVD).
Last I heard, there was like a $5000 barrier to getting the DVD decoding specs. Now I have $5000, but I need it for tuition and food. I would be happy to donate however.
