I like liberatariasm because of its ideal of having minimal government e.g. minimal welfare, social programs, etc. I really dont believe it is noble to try and save everyone from their unfortunate situations. To me this kind of defys the principal of "Survival of the Fittest" I know it is hard for a lot of poeple not to interfere they see something occurring that they dont like. I think most problems should be dealt with at as local if level as possible, and privately first if possible too.
Obviously there has to some measure of help avaliable to people with a stroke of really bad luck, but the that parasite off of the systemreallly either need to become more self sufficient or not survive.
Is it really napster being "unethical, immoral and easily illegal" or the people who download songs of which they do not own a CD of. Napster seems to merely be providing a service, and the users determine whether it is used for good or bad.
I would agree that napster makes it really easy to get the music, (legality of sharing argument aside) but if there is any crime being committed, it is the users of napster committing it.
I recently bought an Imac DV with the intention of running linux on it. I since learned, Linux for the iMac/PPC is quite a bit more primitive than I originally thought when I bought it:( My problems: 8 bit max depth in X, Sound only works though external speakers,no monitor shutdown feature after inactivity. hard to dual boot MacOS/Linux. I really do like the Hardware though.
I just ordered my first Mac, an Imac because I was looking for a little simpilicty in my life. I think the Imac is in general a real ergnomic machine. The Salon says he opted for the slightly cheaper PC, but there is something to be said for such a well engineered all-in-one piece of machinery as the Imac. Now if I can get linux or OSX working, it may be the perfect machine.
I think some musicians get too comfortable, not having to work. Mabey something that is fun to do like make music will become less of means of making a livelyhood and more of a hobby because it is fun, kind of like coding for a lot of OSS developers. I like the idea of musicians or anybody making ends meet by working (providing a service, even touring could be considered the work part) and then giving the fun stuff back to the community. It is always going to be hard to enforce these copyrights over intelectual property that is in the pulic's hands. You might as well get paid to do the tedious stuff like: writing Tax Software or Keeping systems up, and make the world better by sharing the fun code or music that you would do anyway. I hope I dont come across as a communist, because i do believe you have a right to do whatever you want with your one material, sometimes it justs makes more sense not to horde it.
M$'s only goal is to get people to the point where they feel there is no choice but to use IE. They will do this by adding proprietary standards/features. Once People feel there is no alternative and IE is the only choice M$ can charge as much as they want. And if people dont like IE Too Bad!! I read a few of the "Talk Back"s on ZD and so many people support M$ even though that support will lead to their being one real browser with no competition just like windows or worse.
I think our(Linux Users) best bet would support Companies that dont break their pages for Netscape. And hope Mozilla can catch up or at least remain enough of a presence that most sites willstill be functional with it.
I say let softawre companies build in these features and lets see who sells more products companies that respect their customers or Companies that snoop or cut off service to their customers. It might even be a chance for a new company to get a foothold in the market if they can play up the fact their software wont ever erase itself or they wont login and scan your computer. Most of this is irrelevent to me as I mostly use open programs
In general I adhere to the philosophy the government that governs best governs least. The best way to beat M$ would be to focus on an open document/office suite format (Does Gnome or KDE has their own formats already?) and get applications for these working as many platforms as possible
So if the earlier comment is true about M$ not being allowed to do their own UNIX because they sold Xenix to SCO, to get back in they probably really have to aquire SCO. When they sold Xenix, their most threatning competition was not from other UNIX's. Now that UNIX has evolved to to be more user friendly I bet they could get a decent dist if they wanted to follow the Open trend, and leave the GUI part to Gnome or KDE or they could sell it with Motif if they wanted to keep everything strickly commercial. If the price were kept down, I think this would be very appealing to corperate users who think they will nver get fired for buying M$ If they want to avoid the UNIX business all together, they might want to incorperate some of the Cygnus tools type utilites into NT and improve its multi/remote user capabilities
Once I tasted UNIX there was no way I could ever be happy with a single user OS again. NT and linux are just too different. Im sorry but PC Anywhere just doesnt cut it. If MS wants to hinder the growth of Linux they shoould get their own version of UNIX to compete. To get a jumpstart, the should buy SCO and offer it as an additional product..
I've been wanting Alpha for a long time. If anyone reading this knows of a particular supplier that has deals on just the MB + CPU, please let me know a while back I got a quote fo $1,400 for PC164UX2 and 533CPU, but There is some way to get this for 5-600 ill do do it.
We actually have a mix of SGI,SUN, and NT desktops. the UNIX boxes run a Citrix client - which we have had good results with

Sparc 5's are getting cheap. $1400 for the 360mhz with the low L2 cache. (assuming you know someone is a student)
