  1. Blood Pressure Lowering - Thanks Rob on Slashdot Moderation Phase 1.1 · · Score: 1

I have just set my comments threshold to 4. The silence is golden! I have to wonder if I'll see even my own comments, but the s/n is *much* better. :)

I also agree strongly with the AC that called for a moderation history list. That seems prudent for both the censored poster and moderator. It is often useful to have some kind of paper trail.

Keep on truck, Cmdr Taco and the whole /. posse.

(Now, when are you adding spell check to the post comment page... :D )

  2. Wouldn't've heard of FSF without Linux on Feature:Free Linux · · Score: 1

Seems like Linux is FSF's best advertiser. I wish talented programmers would abandon political hairsplitting for programming. GCC and the Linux kernel didn't get created in this manner.

    Oh well.

P.S. Nearly everyone has been kicked by Tom from #perl except for Larry. Larry doesn't IRC. :D

  3. no problem, no sound! on Ask Slashdot: Linux on Mobos w/ Integrated Sound & Video. · · Score: 1

I have a couple of cyrix boxes with this on board sound. I haven't tried to get linux to use that device yet. I will say that it doesn't seem to interfere with the rest of the system if you don't enable it for whatever that's worth.

I would just try compiling the kernel, moduling the sound and see what happens.

    Good luck.

  4. I love microsoft on Microsoft claims Linux provides weak value · · Score: 1

It's good to see that Microsoft has sharpened your technical knowledge as much as your grammar.

I thought trolls only lived under bridges?

  5. Windows X/MacOS considered harmful on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

Jon's liberating experience with Linux is very encouraging to me. It shows that Linux may be
ready for the Desktop. Although I have used but
M$ and Apple Os's for many moons, neither one
encourages the user to understand or even *try*
to understand what's going on under the hood. Does every computer user need to know this? No,
but the OS or GUI shouldn't discourage the curious.

Anyhow, I hope Jon continues this little updates.
I can see how these stories would be useful to converting others. :D

    Happy Superbowl.

  6. '98 saw a lot of NT conversions on Workstations: Unix losing to NT · · Score: 1

From my own experience, I worked at companies moving to NT (from VMS) and had friends who's companies move to NT from SGI boxen. It doesn't
suprise me that there are "numbers" to back this up.

However, M$ has peaked in 1997(that's right). We
are seeing the software empire in their "red giant" phaze. You'll see Linux making BIG MOVES this year and into next. I can smell the Redmont's sweat from hear.

Again, the important thing is to concentrate on improving Linux, not beating M$, who has already lost the game anyway.

Linux on the Desktop? It could happen. As the X desktops become more PHB friendly, greater erosion of NT will occur. It will anyway. Where to you want to go Jan 1, 2000?

As far away from an NT shop as possible. :)

  7. Not a descent, an approach on Descent Into Linux (Part Two) · · Score: 1

Jon has yet to use Linux. Calling these articles
"descent" is a bit dramatic. I prefer "ascent".
Linux has a more primitive interface (before X),
but that interface is far richer than the MacOS or
    WinX environment.

Still, I like to read these installments. I can
avoid coding for a bit. :)

    Good Luck, Jon.
