Having had the experience in working with and for a local police department for 4 years, which also had its own SRT (Strategic Response Team), I can tell you the animosity and disrespect the public gave these local cops was atrocious. These cops were long-time members of that same community. The fact of the matter is, the police response to various situations is proportionate to the increased risk; as the public has more access to resources for home made weapons (e.g. IED) and full-out arsenals... the police have to keep up with this threat to protect themselves as well as the community at large. A quick Google search provides a cornucopia of options for explosives, and this wasn't available 20-30 years ago.
I for one, am proud to have such a strong police force to protect my family and property.
