    Seems like IBM had DOS for the IBM/360. This was before PCP which was before MFT which was before MVT.
    DOS is Disk Operating System, as contrasted with Tape Operating System. Pretty generic, actually.
    Microsoft has been looking at their hype for too long. The're believing it.

    The best metric is the number of undiscovered bugs, but there is no direct way to measure that.
    Discovered bugs measures a lot of things, but is a lously indicator of how many bugs remain. For example, find an exploitable bug. Stop when you've found one.
    Better measure is how hard it is to find a bug, any bug. An approximation is how long it takes someone to find an exploitable bug once they start looking.

    Right.
    Dusty corners where the current "old-timers" know to stay far away from. The dusty corners may be where the problems are, but anyone trying to mess with them quickly learns they have opened a can of worms. Very hard to repackage worms.

    RedHat might be more secure than OpenBSD, but that's pretty long odds.
    Without testing everything against all possible combinations, the reputation of the vendor is probably the best and maybe the only reasonable guide to future performance.

    Well, he didn't say it would be a better level.
    Since there are already such as OpenBSD, TrustedSolaris(sp?), VMS, MVS, you have to wonder just what this whole new level really is. Scary.

    Most OSS performs better than advertised. Even without recourse to the sources.
    Typing redhat.com/errata in my browser (IE on NT) takes me where I want to go. I'm sure a bunch of other guesses would also work. Other than something willful and malicious, which would be rather hard to escape notice and a very fast fix, I'd say they were off the hook for whatever the system would do. The've done more than just take reasonable precautions. Anything that surfaces later is readily accessable to someone who doesn't really even know where to start.

    Fatal mistake. You actually care what it looks like. Word is designed for slopping some stuff in and having it look halfway decent. But do not examine it closely.

    is NOT a hyperlink.
    To be a hyperlink it would need the proper escape sequences.
    Do you mean the CONCEPT of something that takes you somewhere and occupies zero space to do it? Or upper case is text and lower case is hyperlink? Or tagged text as in tntotrtmtatlt tttetxtt or hhhyhphehrhlhihnhk?

    Yes the escapes have a syntax.
    Without the syntax, nothing knows it's an escape.
    English has escapes so you can talk about the period at the end of this sentence.
    HTML has escapes, otherwise scripts and comments would show up as text.
    Shifted a is A, but both are the letter 'A'. Greek Alpha would be a shifted 'A' if you had a Greek shift. Shifted 6 is ^. Looks like an escape that everybody is accustomed to. Probably called an escape because it escapes from the corner the designer had painted himself into.

    You're misunderstanding the purpose of Windows Update. It's purpose is to preserve the breeding ground for worms. It really gets to be fun when Windows Update starts removing the security patches. ;-)
