  1. Cloud security on Wikileaks Booted From Amazon · · Score: 1

As an European security consultant I'll have to use this case as reminder to my customers that there are serious unpredictable political risks in using US-based cloud services.

I like EC2. This was a very bad advertisement for them and all cloud providers.

  2. Wuala on Synchronize Data Between Linux, OS X, and Windows? · · Score: 1

I use Wuala to keep files identically in Windows and Linux. Likely works with Mac as well. I find it quite cool.

  3. kWh / page load? on IE8 Beats Other Browsers In Laptop Battery Life · · Score: 1

I hope that the test was done so that it tells how many times you can fetch some page with your battery.

Otherwise, it is natural that IE8 wins. It is no wonder that it does not use battery because it is slower than others.

  4. Peerscape on Cryptographic Tools To Keep You Hidden On Facebook · · Score: 1

There seems to be an interesting Firefox add-on what is quite much like Facebook but p2p. All the data is shared with your friends but only with your friends. No server at all.

Handier that trying to encrypt via Facebook.

I agree that in this case patents are working as they are supposed to. I have read the patent and it is as good as software patent can be. I had never thought separating XML tags from the text.

Could it be that Microsoft announced it's very weak XML patent just before this case to get people confused. "Microsoft XML patent case" may mean both the very weak XML patent by Microsoft or the strong XML patent against Microsoft.

The research was conducted by going through the huge pile of material that was collected from client computers to Mozilla servers...

this is severely damaging both the US and global software industries

No, US software patents damage only US software industries.

  8. Re:Another concern is on UK ISPs Want Copyright Holders to Pay if Users Sue · · Score: 2, Informative

I have thought this in Finland where I live - I am sure that this applies to UK as well:

In the criminal law it states (section 38 paragraph 5 and 6) that disturbing communications is a criminal offense.

If you disturb communications and either you work for an operator (ISP) OR if the communications is an emergency call, you will go to jail for at least (!) 4 months but up to 4 years!

If I would work for an ISP, I'd think twice.

  9. Flatscreen camera? on A Single Pixel Camera · · Score: 1

Why not to think this vice versa.

It should not be impossible to create a camera using a flat screen LED TV. Every pixel is sensitive to light.

Then the problem is that you don't have any idea of the direction of the light but you have plenty of spots with light information.

You might be able to get 3D picture from the room where TV is located.
