    My god- I didn't even consider that there could be people who don't browse at -1 flat.

    If you're not reading at -1 then you're not reading /. I am deadly serious! If you are broad-minded and intelligent then the racism, sexism etc. will not offend you- and you can enjoy all the running jokes and occasionally side-splitting remarks by ACs.

    Also- by not browsing at -1 you are saying that you trust the moderators not to mod good stuff down and bad stuff up. You trust the moderators? ahahahahahahhaahah. You would have to be a FOOL!

    I remember the time when Jef was hard at work on some transputer board Atari gave him, writing some "awesome game" or other- and nothing came of that.

    On the other hand TRIP-A-TRON was cool (for its day) and metagalactic llamas battle at the end (edge?) of time was a classic.

    No it won't because those w2k users will want to use new apps written by people who used visual studio.net so they will have to install the .net runtime.

    I use a Dakota Scout kvm and used to have visible ghosting (bad) at 1600x1200, now with the same leads it's fine. The reason? I changed monitors- the video lead that comes out of the back of the monitor very often can't be changed so it's a good idea to try a friend's switch if you can.

    BTW- avoid the old analogue type switches with rotary dials- they suck for quality and don't provide fake signals to the computers when not the currently selected one.

    What is it with the verbing of nouns? Next we'll have people who have been mugged saying:

    (I know there's "victimized" but it's different).

    Already in Pirates of SV he is portrayed as evil- especially all that stuff at the end where Steve Jobs tells him that he won't win because they (Apple) have better stuff and Bill says something like

    "But don't you see, Steve? That doesn't matter"

    Ok, so Steve Jobs is hardly painted in a good light in the film, but at least he seems human.

    I find freeBSD 4.4 (the install CD) very useful for getting servers up and running quickly.

    Both my servers at home run freeBSD. The "Minimum" install option gives you no X and the basic servers- you can add on DHCP server and apache easily enough.

    You see the thing is that we can't make it TOO easy for people to set up servers because it is important for people to think carefully about what they are doing when they set it all up. Otherwise a shit loads more servers would get rooted.

    Even bad old NT4 only ran DOS apps because it had a dos emulator in it. (Which ran slower than dosemu (the linux program) by the way).

    I could show you a screenshot of a linux error message that said "Not a valid SNES Rom" but it doesn't mean that linux is built on top of the SNES.

    Actually this really is insightful- a good domain name will only help you at the start. I mean what does an amazon have to do with books? Once you have market penetration your name will become well-known and your domain well-visited. If ebay.com had been called buystuff.com would they have more money now? Doubtful.

    Side note- buy.com (who own buystuff.com the domain) are looking for a senior developer who knows SQL server and VB- so how good can they be?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    Well, they were funding criminals- they gave the Taliban $43M in May this year. Unfortunately it seems the effect was slightly different than intended- video film was used a lot by the general public- but not so much still photography.

    Yes, because it means when you port games you don't have to rewrite them. The ease of making a linux release is the motivation for porting DirectX.

    The wintv pvr is good and cheap- I have one. It does mpeg2 compression on the fly (from videocd quality up to I think higher than dvd spec).

    The only problem I had was with the drivers. I think vanilla 98 was fine- but win2k and me caused the sound not to record sometimes. Who knows - it could have been an IRQ problem specific to my (overloaded) machine. I didn't bother to find out as I'm getting Sky+ (UK) which is a replacement "digibox" which actually rips the mpeg2 stream straight from the satellite feed so no loss of quality- plus it has 2 decoders so you can watch 1 side and record another.

    Disclaimer- I don't work for or own shares in Sky and haven't even seen this Sky+ yet- so it may be crap for all I know.

    I mean, just what is interesting about it? The only slightly interesting thing in it is the lack of regard for what rms calls linux. As one poster has already pointed out, his dig at xp and freebsd 5 seems childish given that he states he doesn't follow them much. Or is it supposed to be interesting just because it's linus? Would people find what Linus throws up after too much gin interesting? The contents of a tissue after he blows his nose?

    The scarey thing is that I think I know the answer to that question.

    Actually VB programmers are still treated like 2nd class citizens as VB.NET is a horrible mutant beast which resembles VB6 with bits awkwardly stuck on to work with .net while still hitting those admirable targets of being as not compatible with v6 as possible and having the most fucked up syntax possible.

    Only if they use C#- C++ is still not RAD in VS.NET.

    VS.NET is going to be good fun- but only if you use C#.

    I don't regret a second that I spent messing about with the Stampede Linux distro because it taught me a hell of a lot about how everything works. Ok, so the actual fact is that everything was horribly broken and incomplete, but it worked out well for me.

    Stampede's goals at the start were good- a totally pentium-optimized distro- this at a time when pentium-optimization was virtually unheard of in distributions.
