seems to me i remember reading somthing about the nipc being in trouble, so it wouldnt really surprise me if they were to do a lot of hollering just to get themselves noticed and keep their jobs.
that they HAVE to buy what the RIAA/MPAA/MS sells them. if you dont want to pay for it, by all means...feel free to let it sit on the shelf of your local blockbuster, disc jockey, whatever.
there are a lot of musicians who actually want you to hear their music, and they will play it for you at a local venue, and then, after the show is over, they will sell you a cd at a reasonable price. and the money goes directly to the artist.
this is the real reason that the RIAA is afraid of napster, because it represents an alternative method of distribution. many of todays highest grossing tours, (Dave Matthews, Phish,Widespread Panic, Ben Harper) allowed taping in the tradition of the grateful dead, and as a result became quite successful.Napster was the perfect forum for the trading of this kind of material. Legal, free, and in every case, a lot better than the tripe that the recording industry feeds you.
The problem isnt with copyright, its with the monopolistic power that the above mentioned groups have to control EVERY channel of distribution, and to squeeze not only consumers, but even retailers for every penny they have. the only recourse we have is to do without it, and we can. just ask Linus.
Personal responibility is a thing of the past. why would we even want to take care of ourselves when all these decisions could be made for us by government officials who care so deeply about the plight of the citizenry? we cant be troubled to educate ourselves or use common sense once in a while. think about it. if we really had any common sense, why would we need seatbelt laws, or helmet laws , or drug laws? the general public is so incompetent that it cant be trusted to evaluate information objectively, therefore safeguards must be put in place to prevent the spread of ignorance...and weve got to hurry before its too late! oh...wait...
Seat belt laws, smoking bans, helmet laws, all supposedly to protect you from yourself, which is bad enough in and of itself, but really only protect the bottom line of insurance companies, employers, and anyone else who benefits from your existence. dont kid yourself and think that its just because you might get hurt. its because you might file an insurance claim or miss a day of work. The government is nothing but an extension of whatever corporation currently owns stock in its officials. and this guy proposes we do away with the first amendment in order to keep people from having to apply critical thinking skils? who benefits from this? I certainly dont see how it would make my life any better. i just have to wonder what effect all of this will have on the gene pool years from now if stupidity is allowed to flourish like it has over the past 40 years.
