Agreed. I came here to ask where I can put a nickel into the pot for getting a uBlockBrowser App.
Also, yes, lo! To all ye nerds who have not yet heard The Gospel, listen here! uBlock is the new AdBlock Plus because ABP sold out several years ago and, additionally, is implemented poorly. The new prophet is uBlock. Also, use Ghostery. Together, uBlock and Ghostery do what I want blockers to do, good luck with yourselves.
You pay a gas tax today for all of those things. I can see the benefit of saving those few tax dollars, but at the expense of having The Man attach a GPS tracker to your car? It seems like a no-brainer to me.
Yes, because semi trucks pay gas taxes. Also, other taxes.
But more to the point, you and I benefit from semi trucks delivering the goods that we like to buy. You and I do NOT benefit from private passenger vehicles other than our own. Make sure to factor that into your cost-benefit analysis.
Neither can the gas tax and nobody worries about that.
My solution would be to increase the gas tax a little, tax electricity over a baseline by a little bit, nudge up vehicle registration taxes, and if that isn't enough then maybe have a little tax specific for non-gas vehicles. I don't think we need to track every car on every trip everywhere in the state.
Wuuuuuuut? I'm not exactly a huge Euro traveler but where I went the roads were nothing near so awesome as American roads (Michigan excepted; that state is decrepit).
Yeah this is so obvious. If all they want to do is tax your mileage, then the beacon can simply transmit your odometer reading, and GPS is unnecessary.
Yes but the benefit caused by a single tractor-trailer is also much greater than the benefit caused by a passenger car. A large number of people benefit from the truck, but only the passengers benefit from the car.
My opinion is that the gas tax was a great way to tax vehicles. It skews toward heavier users, which is good; toward less efficient vehicles, which is good; is anonymous, which is good.
The problem is that it fails to tax non-gas vehicles. My solution to that would be to tax high-use electricity and bump the vehicle registration tax. I'm disinclined to Oregon's proposal.
Why not implement a negative tax rate instead of a higher minimum wage? We could have the same benefits as a minimum wage with these additional benefits:
* Tie the bonus to having a job * Burden is on government instead of business * Don't overpay high school kiddies who aren't heads of households
Republicans are against that because they don't want to help poor people. But why are Democrats against it? just because they specifically want to burden businesses?
I don't think I agree. "Enjoying it" is another way of saying "justice". I enjoy it when criminals go to prison, where they suffer the loss of freedom and social isolation. If you want to call me evil then, well, okay, but that's not how I think about it.
Same argument for the death penalty. Do I "enjoy it"? Yeah, I guess so, but I think of it as "preferring justice".
For me, the division is our system of law: it's okay to make people suffer if you give them substantial due process of law; otherwise, it's not okay. That's why bombing innocent people at a marathon is different than the cool-headed post-appeal conduction of the death penalty.
People need to stop complaining about having awesome lives of privilege. Seriously.
"It sucks to be rich because I don't like paying all these taxes." Then give away your money, asshole. "It sucks to be the king because I have to make all these hard choices." Then abdicate, asshole. "It sucks to be beautiful because everyone just looks at me." Try being ugly, asshole. "It sucks to be Asian because it's harder for me to get into Harvard." It sucks harder to grow up outside of a high-achieving community, asshole.
Yes. There is racial bias against Asians for college admission, and to a lesser extent against white people too. Boo hoo for us, we'll have to be content with out leg up in everything else. Does it suck a little? Yeah, a little, and WAY LESS than the alternative, so stop complaining.
How long will we need AA? I'd estimate ten times longer than we had slavery, so something like a thousand years. Then we can get rid of it, that will be a great day.
Okay. What's the problem? Do medical schools give diplomas to underperforming black doctors? I'm pretty sure they don't. AA is about getting in, not getting out. It's about opportunity, not achievement.
"what we need is a system that isn't stacked against people based on what family they were born into."
Yeah, maybe a system that tries to recognize those low-opportunity families and provides them with a little extra opportunity in education and employment. We can call it "Affirmative Action". Sounds good, let's get right on that.
"I never applied for any aid, and never receive any either"
Bro, you don't get the affirmative action bonus because it's not for you. Congratulations, you're a member of one of the social hegemon races. Enjoy the ride but try not to complain about it, it makes you look like a jerk.
Your cross to bear is to not have people assume you are stupid, lazy and violent. Other people have heavier crosses so try to have some empathy.
"Japan, in Korea, in China they do not have AA"
In Japan, Korea, and China they don't have racial heterogeneity either. And what little they do have is a serious problem.
Skin color is irrelevant? Mmm hmm, right. I'll bet you a thousand dollars I can guess your skin color because that statement almost always comes out of one color of person. Irony!
That depends on what definition of 'discrimination' you use.
Today the word has taken on a negative connotation because we apply the word to certain kinds of bad discrimination; but, of course, almost all discrimination is good, we just don't use the word for those things, we use a different word.
Sorry, I can't hear what that guy was saying over the noise of not seeing ads. If I can ever turn down the volume on these not-ads then I might have some attention to pay to him.
I'd be interested in a small wager on the outcome of this prediction. Without knowing much about it, I'll bet that it comes true in slightly more than five years, say seven years. Anyone want to bet a small sum that it doesn't come true? A small sum to me is, oh, between five and two hundred dollars.
Bullshit. Let's put your theory to the test by giving the kid a noose for a night. If he doesn't hang himself, then we know for sure he'd rather live than die.
But what he wants doesn't matter. What matters is how most Americans want justice to be carried out. So what do we want? Do we want live in prison or do we want to execute him? I'm fine with whatever the majority wants, but I'm voting for execution.
Apparently /. dislikes Unicode
Flashback to 2004, man!

When you drive your car, I don't benefit.
When a trucker drives a semi, I benefit, because I buy products in stores.
So I'm more inclined to tax you.
I'd prefer this to toll roads, too, but even more than either of those options I'm prefer any of dozens of other options.
Wuuuuuuut? I'm not exactly a huge Euro traveler but where I went the roads were nothing near so awesome as American roads (Michigan excepted; that state is decrepit).

Do you mean, the tax burden used to skew toward low-MPG vehicles, and is now MPG-agnostic?

Forget about maximum security prison. I say... release him. Just let him go into the public. The problem will solve itself in a few days, I bet.

Why not?
"The State should never ever have the ability to kill its own citizens"
Sure it should have the ability -- and not only the ability, but a legal rubric for deciding when to do so. And it does have those things, how grand.
