  1. Re:Who? on For Us, The Living, by Robert A. Heinlein · · Score: 2, Insightful

Robert Heinlein was probably the most influential science fiction writer of the 20th century, possibly the most influential American writer of the 20th century. He didn't create modern science fiction single-handedly, but he dominated the field from his first short story in 1940. It's impossible to estimate how many scientific and engineering careers were launched by his juvenile novels of the 1950s, but the number must be huge.

According to one of the Heinlein society people I spoke with at Torcon, the Moon is a Harsh Mistress has been optioned for a film, I think it was by SKG (Spielberg's company). Could be interesting.

I agree with you about Glory Road, although if it was produced by a Hollywood outfit it would have to be renamed Gory Road.

I had an operation on my eyes when I was 2-1/2 years old. I remember the trip from Sault Ste. Marie to Petosky, including taking the ferry across the Mackinaw Strait (the only time I ever did that), and parts of Petosky.

I visited Petosky a few years ago, for the first time since I was there for the operation, and was able to visit some of the places that I remembered from the trip. It was a pretty erie sensation, seeing them again after more than 40 years.

I do have other memmories from around when I was 2 years old, or possibly a bit younger, but these are the earliest that I have "objective" confirmation.

Save yourself a lot of grief and hire a technical writer.

If you have to do it yourself, look at some of the articles at www.raycomm.com and check the techwr-l mailing list archives there.

There are a lot of good technical writers, with experience with API and system documentation, as well as user docs, who are out of work right now. It shouldn't be hard to find somebody.
