SF Rush used Ethernet to talk amongst the machines, storing the data (I believe) on all the hard drives redundantly ; no server.
The modem squawk you hear when entering your ID number is just audio fluff to make it "all high-techy and junk"...it is not really dialing out anywhere.
There were plans to add Rush to the "Midway Tournament Network" and actually be able to compete around the world, but I have not seen any evidence of that actually happening yet.
We had so much more planned for Pinball 2000; the Expo 99 tournament was just a taste of things to come. Sigh.
