  1. Re:Um...no... on Sony Already Lost Media War to Apple? · · Score: 1

I read this a lot, but a glance at bestbuy/circuitcity.com does not confirm it. Sure I can save a little money but not a whole lot by going with the Ipod competitor. Most of the hd based players are only 20-50 dollars less than the ipod. And a savings of less than 13% is hardly going to sway me, and obviously most of the market, from the winner. And when you take into account the aftermarket support, and the design, it hardly pays to go with the device that has 5% of the market.

in the movies and on TV, everyone, no matter whether they're accountants or FEMA employees, everyone uses the brand-spankin'-newest Macintosh, with a big glowing logo on the side. And, you know, the reason that happens has nothing to do with endorsements, it has to do with the movie & TV makers wanting to support Mac.

I'd wager it has more to do with the fact that Apple pays (paid) for product placement. StargateAtlantis uses a lot of Dell laptops on their show. Do you think that's because the producers love Dell or because they were paid to use Dells.

When in doubt, follow the money.

Scared of tabs. Oh the horror.

I always thought MS should have, during the first time a user logs on or when a software package is installed, the user classify themselves as to their computing ablility. If you click advanced all the little safeguards, questions, wizards and other PITA's never bother you. Ratchet up/down the help based on user experience.

Why should I have to hack the registry, change the options in every app, and flip countless control panel settings to get the PC to behave the way I want. Give me a global sliding scale.

But make it easy to change that scale afterwards for those that over estimated their experience or are now more technically savy.

Granted, everything you say is true, but it will never stop companies from trying to implement drm. The lack of fool-proof (or near fool-proof) drm is probably keeping a huge amount of content out of the E-relm. So a good drm with consumer friendly rights (I can dream, can't I) will probably be a good thing.

Either that or they'll lobby to make copywrite violation a capital offense.

    1) make the content cheaper than the paper version. Why should I spend more for soft copy than I do for hard copy.

    2) DRM in inevitable, but I should be able to give/sell my copy of whatever I'm reading when I'm done with it. If I can lend a book to a friend I should be able to lend an ebook to a friend. Come up with a DRM method that allows the content to be on any device but only one device at a time.

While I can understand why networks and advertisers don't want me skipping commercials, what could be the gripe against time shifting? Seems to me I'd be able to watch more of their shows if I could delay viewing to a more convienent time. Isn't that a win/win for everybody?

radio stations are in the business to make money. they play whatever people are buying.

Actually, if you read all the reports of modern payola, radio stations play what they're paid to play. And I'm pretty sure the record companies wouldn't pay the stations if airplay didn't affect cd sales. So I'm pretty sure you've got the cause and effect reversed.

Who knows... maybe there's a scientific reason for the generational gap in musical tastes.

My theory is that no generation wants to listen to something their parents think is good. If mom and dad are listen to rock/punk/blues/ect what can you possibly listen to that they wouldn't like?

    Rap and Britney that's what.
