I've played Myst 1-3, just beating the 3rd a week ago, and am not stopping there. I've also, read two of the books (really fascinating).
I was around to play it when the 1st came out, and it was amazing, but the prerendered perspectives seemed like a gimmick that worked well for just this game's purpose. While the graphics were great, it was really the challenge, immersive atmosphere, and 'cleverness' they cultivated that fascinated me. It was a great story, with great puzzles, and imaginative environments that made it wonderful to me, not the rendering gimmicks, (though I could see how prerendered scenes allowed them to better create the worlds they wanted to portray) Further, I think they took the series as far as they could, it had a good run. But you know, I still really hope the series picks up again.
