  1. Re:What next? on Motorola to purchase Metrowerks · · Score: 1

Apple is NOT the only customer for PowerPC. Not even the high-end PowerPC chips like the 750. In fact, considering all PowerPC sales, more chips went into NON Apple Mac than into Apple Macs. Many 750's and other high-end PPC chips are used in network routers and very high end printing, maybe even more apps than that.

I think Congress should mark Pioneer 10 and the two Voyager probes as National Monuments. At least that way they can continue to get funding. Imagine being that little probe, after working so diligently to retrieve data on the outer planets for us, only to be abandoned in space all alone in the night. Brings a tear to my eye.

Plus, that way when we DO get FTL travel, some smart ass won't try to vandalize them. :)

  3. Nope, and here's why... on Will PPC Become the Preferred Linux Platform? · · Score: 1

Because both Moto and IBM don't see themselves in the desktop market. If Moto and IBM wanted to, they could create a low-cost motherboard, sell it cheap, support it, and people would buy it. But they choose not to, and so PowerPC will continue to be the niche market it is. Which is kinda sad, since it IS such an easy to understand architecture compared to x86. Altivec totally crushes SSE and 3dNow!, but we the consumer will never see it. Oh well.

My idea is for the next generation PowerPC to switch to the Ev6 bus, and work with Compaq and AMD to gain compatibility with their new Alpha/Athlon motherboards. I think that would be totally cool.

The Microsoft/NT story is, as always, more complicated than it appears. It had all the usual corporate type problems (money, politics, power, etc), and a certain lack of vision, and not all on Microsoft's part. Too bad, NT runs pretty well on PowerPC.

Moto/IBM has a real opportunity with Linux to make a profitable niche for themselves. I only hope they can see that as well.

That's total BS. A friend of mine and I played a 2 (us) vs 5(them) game once, and we won ONLY because we held high ground, and lasted long enough for the AI to waste all of its materials. Siege tanks, guarded with missile turrets, backed up with SCV's to repair everything, kept us alive and hammering on the AI. We finally managed to clean house after the computer ran out, building a couple of Battlecrusisers (we were low on minerals too! :) to slowly go around the map kicking butt. Best game ever. :)

I think NASA reusing there probe to search for water is a great idea. I don't mind my tax dollars spent there (Who wants a "contribute 5 dollars to space exploration" checkoff on their tax forms? I do, screw the presidential campaigns), but it's cool they thought up this way of using it. As far as trash/using up the water goes:

    1. It's not going to be trash people. Think about it. 4k km/sec will turn the probe into its constituient atoms. They're not gently landing, after all. I do wonder how big the crater it's going to make will be. Maybe they could gain some extra science off of that? Crater generation dynamics or something.

    2. If there is so little water, that the impact of Lunar Prospector coudl possibly use up a significant fraction of it, then it probably isn't worth using.

Run, do NOT walk, to your local DVD warehouse and buy a copy of From the Earth to the Moon. One of the best $100 I had ever spent, and worth every penny of it. Even if you're not a Nerd (tm), it is a great story, with drama, heartbreak, and joy.

Best thing to ever come out of HBO, IMO.

One whole episode, Spider, is devoted to the design, and construction, of the LMs.

*Sniff* brings a tear to my eye remembering the scene where the project manager just stands there looking at the first one, realizing after all those years it wasn't coming back.

Even with your 27" TV and non-surround sound stereo, DVD is a great experience. My wife and I have a 27", and watching DVDs is so great. It will swear you off VCRs forever. The video/audio is always clear, and when you pause it, it is clear as glass. Only thing I don't like is fast-forward and rewind aren't continuous. It skips around when it does that. Other than that, DVD is great
