"Geeks should stick to designing the technology, and leave the aesthetics to people who actually have design training"
Although you didn't mention it, I assume your talking about "hardware" when you wrote about Geeks sticking to technology and not aesthetics. I say that because I'm a programmer for a small law firm in NYC, and have written numerous GUI's for some of the Applications our associates use. One of the responsibilities I have with writing the programs is the User Lay Out(or Aesthetics as you write). Your post seems to insinuate that my employer should take on a design consultant which is highly unreasonable not to mention much to costly.
So, being a "geek"(I assume you're one like many here), are you involved with putting furnishings in your residence, or putting clothes on in the morning, etc. Since these are nothing but aesthetics, should we leave these things to people with design training as you wrote? It doesn't make sense to me.
Back in '91, (Through emails)I spoke to Mr. Shannon a few times while researching Crytography and the applied Mathematics involved for my Thesis. I trully respect him for the fact that he took time out of his schedule to actually respond to me. Through his emails, I found him to be sharp witted, humorous, and charismatic. I'll miss him.
"Since when did the US government ever do anything useful with money anyway?"
Who's fault is that? It's OURS....the American peoples fault. That's the beauty of the American Democracy. If you don't appreciate the current policies our government has in place, we have the power(as an overwhelming majority) to change it. By voting in policy makers that are in agreement with your own philosophies/ideologies we can make a difference. Power to the people could never be more true with our form of government, it's just ashame we choose not to take advantage of it.
"Would you rather a billion dollar satellite blew up?"
Actually, I wouldn't mind it. The money spent on satellites in R&D and pre/post production is money put back into our fumbling economy. It's an investment in companies employing many thousands of people.
So, you didn't get to see an uninhabited Galaxy billions of light years away. Who cares, it's not like viewing it would cure real problems we face in this world(poverty, education, etc, etc, etc)
I guess I"ll start to run a BSD flavor, now that I'm going to have to hose my Linux partition. I definitely won't do that until I find out MS' stand on it though.
I'm not as worried about the potential costs of purchasing disks as I am about the "Pay per play" clause these clusterfucks will probably impose once they get themselves organized.

"blahblahblah, i know selecting the genes you want goes against nature and natural selection and all that good stuff"
It's odd that you say selecting certain genes goes against nature and natural selection. In essence, cloning in general, can be found guilty of the same crime. Should we be able to successfully clone humans in the future, those clones would not be conceived from the natural act of sexual intercourse, therefore, human cloning is in no way "natural" or an act of nature(whether you select certain genes or not).
