  1. Here's a solution for $69.99 on DIY Solar Resources? · · Score: 1

This is a solar security light with motion sensor. The solar panel is attached to the light/battery/motion sensor by 4 meters of wire. Put the panel on the roof of the shed. Put the security light inside. Whenever it senses motion, it will turn the light on for a few minutes. When you leave, it turns off. No switch, no wiring, no problems.

This one uses a 10W halogen bulb, so it isn't very efficient. I'm sure there are others that use LEDs, or perhaps you could convert this yourself.

  2. HP loaded the gun, but who pulled the trigger? on HP Admits Selling Infected Flash-Floppy Drives · · Score: 1

I'm not trying to diminish HP's responsibility for this mess, but if any server admin admitted that they had picked up one of these worms from any other vector, the commenters here would have spitted and roasted said admin for gross incompetence. Any systems vulnerable to this crap are likely to have much bigger problems in store.

  3. Too good to be true? on Best of CES Awards · · Score: 1

This PS falls under the 'too good to be true' category. It requires 12 volts at 7 amps (10 amps peak). That's going to take a heck of a big, hot brick for 120V use. The brick for my Dell XPS laptop supplies 7.7 amps at 19V, and makes a great foot warmer.

    Further, the manual says:

"Total combined output of the 3.3 and 5V rail should not exceed 40Watts under fanless
    operation."

It might be tough to get airflow down on the MB where this sits.

All that said, it looks like a great idea. The fewer wires the better.

Um, seems to me that damn near every cable company is providing their own PVR, too.

  5. Neighborhood popularity of amateur radio on Could Broadband Over Power Lines be Dangerous? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Having an amateur radio antenna is like a lightning rod for neighborhood electronics problems. I've not transmitted for a couple of years now, but that has not stopped neighbors from blaming me for every glitch that occurs with their electronics. I can imagine what will happen if I key up my transmitter and disrupt every internet connection for a couple of miles....
