  1. Re:Question on Fiber On Your Motherboard...Soon! · · Score: 1

First, as others have stated, optical fibers are virtually lossless so no light would escape. Second, most optical fiber systems operate in the infrared, so your eyes couldn't see the light if it did leak.

This means the sound should be about 400 times less at 20 meters or about 46 dBA at 20 meters. Another way to look at it is that this should be about as loud as a car 20 meters from you when you are one meter from this unit which should be rather quiet. That is unless you drive an old VW bug. :)

  3. still not a practical method on New Horizon For Nanotech · · Score: 1

Even though this new system is 10 times faster than their previous rig, e-beam litho is a very slow method of pattern writing. The smaller spot size should be great for research into two dimensional structures. While this is cool, there must be university research that's pushing the envelope even more than this. This doesn't seem like front page material to me. Anyone have any links to an even faster rastered or smaller spot sized rig (although the article didn't give any numbers IIRC)?

The doping in this situation is to fill in part of the honeycomb with the glass or to remove part of the glass honeycomb leaving air. This allows certain wavelengths within the bandgap to propogate. This is analagous to doping in semiconductors were you are replacing atoms with more (or fewer) electrons thus adding energy states within the bandgap.

Call Corning and ask how much SMF-28

they'll tell you they aren't quoting
prices this year! I'd call that short
supply! And all I want is about 4 km...
