  1. Re:Beaowulf not the target audience on One-Machine Linux Cluster · · Score: 1

On an AS/400 or Iseries machine the only way to run Linux is in a LPAR (Logical Partition of hardware resources). And Linux or other OSses like AIX and OS/400 can run together several times on such a machine with a virtual IP-lan between the different partitions. However, the main OS always must be OS/400, so this means high costs. The IBM and alike guys ask a lot money for their machines because of the high software and maintanance costs.
The original mentioned new Linux feature have a something to do with clustering. You can cluster two Linux partitions on a single box, the availability gets higher because when there is a software failure the second partition takes it over.

The goverenment has information about us on paper and in serveral databases which is completely logical, because this is needed for making decesions and sending taxforms and things.

The real problem with the new plan is SECURITY. Many hackers around the world will focus on this huge database, which will be difficult to manage because of it's size and loads of different users. Not connecting it to the internet immediately seems to be a good plan.

  4. Power3/4 and OS/400 on Linux On Another New Architecture: PowerPC 64-bit · · Score: 1

Power3/4 compatiblity would be very nice for me. I can run Linux and OS/400 at the same time on the same machine. This means I do not have the need to buy other hardware, like pc-servers to provide a total solution from databases and mail with OS/400 to file, print and webserving with Linux. The hardware based on the powerseries chip is scalable to a maximum of 24 processors, so one machine does it all!

RAID 5 the freaking disk space with RAID 5 hardware (icp-vortex has good controllers) and then RAID-1 mirror the RAID-5 array (you need two) over ethernet. not exactly easy to set up but doable Instead of using ethernet you can also buy some SCSI glass converters (+/- $2000,- each) for long distance SCSI and perform the total action in hardware.
