I read this story earlier on PCWorld. The thing about the investigation that jolts me the most is the implicit trust given to the NASA engineers as if they are the 'experts' on source code. I have respect for them, but who decided that they are the ultimate authority? Also, the claim that they reviewed 280,000 lines of source code is a little bit ridiculous as well. Ask anyone who has done any enterprise coding on big and complex projects and they will scoff at this. There is no way to 'review' that much code and account for every possible circumstance.
I have a feeling that this is just PR material sponsored jointly by Toyota and the US government to spur consumer spending and sweep shit under the rug.
As an engineering student, I think this idea is impractical. When I'm preparing for a midterm, I'm usually burning through practice problems at the end of each chapter. The ability to glance at the last few pages of the book (physically) to check my answer, or to flip back a few pages to reread a concept is invaluable. I'm sure I would get annoyed rather quickly with the electronic equivalent.
Now on the other, for light reading. I can see how it's practical.
I'm a 22 year old electrical engineering student in my first year of studies. The majority of the students in my classes are between 17 and 19 years old. The students ask questions during lectures that make me wonder how they made it to university.
Here is a small list of what these students don't have: - skills in algebra (Why are they registered for Calculus I?) - sentence mechanics (I walked down the street and so far I never seen any thing.) - social skills (Friendly people sit in the back corner. They snarl at everyone.)
No wonder they don't understand those crazy credit card offers.
This hack is by an alien. Near Verisign's headquarters, about 20 UFO sighting have been seen everyday for the last month. Are they trying to tell us something? Are they trying to control us via manipulation of Microsoft? Are they introducing subliminal messaging to DirectX(tm)?

Should they open source the ECU? Just saying...

I would never replace my textbooks with it.

Only Kibo can save us.
