You're damn right I wouldn't. Might as well provide a "make this site look like hell and render it nearly useless" link. If I'm sniffing at your browser type and offering your browser a slightly modified CSS file as a result to try to keep it from freaking out when I attempt to change a simple CSS attribute, then be grateful I care enough to do so. If I wrap my site's content around a slightly modified template to better fit your resolution settings, the less you know about it the better.
I don't want to "personalize your web experience" or "create a site that caters itself to your needs." I just want the damn thing to look the same for everyone, a desire that isn't at all facilitated by the current state of web tech. Forget about Flash applications or complex nested DHTML menus. A site using a vanilla HTML+CSS1 combination produces a bewildering variation of output from browser to browser, even without venturing outside of the Netscape4/IE5 safe zone.
It would be nice if web designers weren't even curious about display resolution or bandwidth capabilities. It would be nice if the current state of web tech was mature enough to obviate the perceived need for that kind of information because it provided a development platform that wasn't a running target.
It would be nice but it will never happen. So don't be shy, do us a favor, expose your display resolution to the world.
