It's also a matter of image; which is worse on the kid, the stigma of no computer or the stigma of a "worthless" (by modern standards) computer. Keep in mind, kids can be very cruel.

If the point is to help the kids learn how to use a computer so that education may take place, then what does image have to do with education ?

Many slashdotters in high school did not meet the "image" of the cool partier (I sure some did) since they were one of the few who could use a computer for something other then games. Did that stop you? Of course not.

People have taught themselves under much greater hardship then our spoiled generation. Frederick Douglas- as a black slave it was illegal for him to learn to read. He not only learned to do so, as an adult he became a professional writer and speaker after he was free.

    >Bush says he wants education to be a major >priority in his administration, but his >proposals, which were outlined this week, focus >on literacy testing and accountability -- they >don't even mention technology or computing.

This quote misses the whole point of the Bush education plan. His plan is not about government dictating all the details, but to give parents choices to what they think will best help the child. As part of the Bush plan if the public school your child goes to is a failing school, then the parents get $1,500 to $2,000 a semester to take that child to a private school or to home school.

Given this idea, if you public school does not have computers or does not know how to use the computers they already have, then the parents can take the child to a school that can do the job.

This plan is like Econ 101. When many businesses compete for the same market, the ones who deliver the worst service for the worst price are the soonest to loose market share.

Another piece of hype is the attacks on Bush in education in Texas. While people try to make examples f books being banned or that he fears porn in the schools (which who would actually argue for porn in school - people who usually do not have kids).

    But look at the facts:

    • Under Bush, Math and reading scores for minority children have risen faster then any other major state.
    • Bush's Secratary of Education is not only from Texas, but has been the super intendent of the 8 th larest school distrct in the nation. It also has some of the highest test scores and graduation numbers for minorities in the nation.
    • My Wife (whose job is in software of educational districts) brings home educational stats for all states in the nation. Texas has been in the top 5 for 5 years.
    • When I used to work at a division of McGraw-Hill (education book publisher) management used to always say whatever Texas wants Texas gets. The reason they did so was Texas used it's power to demand good text books. If the books did not meet the standards, the book need to change, not thre standards.
I just find the whole anti-bush rantings as statement of biased not based on any facts, but on the loose of sore/looserman.
