  1. Re:this ROCKS on Mutopia: Where Music is Free · · Score: 1

Everything's an FTP link for consistency. The .ps links have to be FTP since they are stored as .ps.gz on the server and the server will only ungzip them when they're fetched using FTP. Because these must be FTP links, I decided to make all the links FTP. If your browser is set up correctly, you should be able to view midi/png links without downloading them.

I don't know if it's possible to change the server's configuration to make HTTP downloads of .gz files possible, as I live in the UK and the server's in Canada. It's provided free so I don't want to hassle the owner more than is necessary.

The two URLs are the same machine which seems to be back up again now.

New versions of Sibelius are only available on Windows and Mac. All versions of Sibelius use a proprietory file format, the details of which have not been released (AFAIK) so it's completely unsuitable for an Open Source project.

Yes, it is possible to output as MIDI, but this doesn't preserve any of the formatting and importing MIDI into Lilypond (and tidying up the resulting .ly files) is a time consuming business.

The only cost for the Mutopia project so far has been the registration of the domain name (kindly paid for by David Chan). The web/ftp space is provided free and I update the site for free when I have time.

I guess the sensible way to introduce funding would be if someone really wants to see a piece of music then they could offer to pay for someone to transcribe it and submit the transcription to Mutopia.

Despite us creating the MutopiaBSD license because people wanted to produce new editions / arrangements for Mutopia, no one's actually used it yet!

All the music currently on Mutopia is simply released into the public domain.

I've had one person asking this week whether we should use the Gnu FDL but I haven't had time to check the details of this out yet.
