What about SSL? A cracker with enough computing power to regularly break encrypted SSL transactions would be able to retrieve all sorts of financial information about individuals: passwords, credit cards, SSN, etc.
The best solution is to encrypt EVERYTHING, and get joy from the satisfaction that some hacker just spend 20 weeks cracking an email to your mother.
