We can't emotionally morn for people who we have no connection too. We can just not like it as an academic point. While Actors and Actresses aren't any more deserving for life then the children of the "third world", their work as affected our lives, thus we have more of an emotional bond to them.
"No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee."
When you see the cost of replacing a mirror, it'd be cheaper to have a camera and a 7" screen inside. On the other hand, night vision would suffer from having a screen on.
I use an OnStream Echo 30 GB at home and have had no trouble with it so far. The speed is pretty good and once you get past their somewhat wierd backup interface, it works really nice. I'd love to see Veritas incorporate support for this drive in their BackupExec software someday.
Warp Factor 9 is NOT simply nine times the speed of light. Warp is not a linear scale, but rather increases in an exponential manner.
Did anyone notice that the Apollo or Space Shuttle missions had no plants? They used oxygen canisters and air scrubbers. If this is possible in our time, then an equally viable solution is possible several centuries in the future.
I'm getting completely fed up with the RIAA. Rather than simply embracing the technology and distribution medium, they feel a need to thwart all technologies and mediums that threaten their empire. I would have a little more respect for them if they became more proactive and open to new technologies.
I agree that the telecoms need to realize that we need broadband, and we need it now.
Unfortunately, the telecoms in my aren't doing shit to help us get DSL or any kind of high speed connection. We do have cable modem, but the company sucks and I'm sure they must have a 75% uptime at best. I'd almost rather stay of 56K with a 99% uptime than to be down almost two whole days a week. And a sat link is just too darn expensive for the performance you get.
Until broadband becomes cheep and widely available, we're always going to have modem users.
I think part of the problem may be the ISPs. I have 56K and my ISP is seemingly very overloaded with users and of course all of our bandwidth suffers. If I connect early in the morning (3 am) then I can get some decent pings. But trying to play during peak hours is horrible.
I think the ISPs need to increase their backbone or route traffice more effiently. I'm sure there are some really great ISPs out there, but I sure don't have one.

To counter some of your points:

That would be a valid argument if the data was not of a sensitive and/or confidential nature.

I'm just glad I'll have a T1+ at college.
