  1. ResEdit on No More Mac Tweaking? · · Score: 1

Or perhaps they will release their own UI tweaking utility like ResEdit, which pretty much enabled you to change the widgets and such but kept the "feel" the same.

  2. Nothing New on Politicizing Science · · Score: 1

This has been a common theme throughout the past several years. George Bush Sr. had been in office for less than six months when the OMB (Office of Management and Budget) censored James E. Hansen of the Goddard Institute. Hansen was to make many predictions about environmental damage due to intensifying greenhouse gasses but was forced by the OMB to state that his scientific evidence was inconclusive.

As another example, George W. Bush has, as critics attest, violated the Freedom of Information Act in enabling the censorship EPA environmental information.

The point of the matter is that Government has been censoring and manipulating scientific opinion to serve its political needs. Anyone who thinks this is a new concept is mistaken. As scientific issues grow in complexity and clash with current procedures and legislature, we can surely expect more of such behavior. This action comes as no surprise.

For very interesting interpretations, read Godel Escher Bach by Douglas R. Hofstadter.

While I agree that sometimes a cake is just a cake, this book may change your mind on the subject of Escher.

  5. Re:You actually ELECT these people? on MPAA vs. Television · · Score: 1

When it costs millions to run for a Senatorial position, the people who put you in power ARE the MPAA/RIAA/(insert Large business intrest here)

Senators who actually make it to the ballot usually take up very neutral positions as far as their constituencies go, and then they change their tune as soon as they are elected. Sadly money speaks louder than voters.

More like, Microsoft will do whatever it takes to make money. That's the aim of Microsoft. Not to provide for the general good of all software users. Not to make life better for consumers. Microsoft's goal is to earn that extra market share and please the shareholders. They will do whatever it takes to do this. They will eliminate the competition, and they will capitalize on people's frenzied desire for security. The frustration of competitors is an effect of the M$ policy, not the motivation.

  9. Re:I'll play this one before the MMORPG on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic · · Score: 1

I don't think that one game could satisfy ALL starwars fans appetites. Starwars fans are more of a heterogenous group than many think, with varying tastes in games/literature/etc...

For some, the MMORPG will be the end all be all of starwars games. Others enjoy action oriented games like Jedi Knight. Some like pen and paper, some like flight sims such as X-wing.

Personally, I would like to see a game like Neverwinter.

Scientists today discovered that when news hits a "Slashdot Medium," the news is translated into "comments" which may or may bear any relationship to the original news. These comments occasionally appear before the news is fully transmitted throught the "Slashdot Medium" but do not appear to violate causality.
