  1. Subscribe to TV Shows on Video iPod May Arrive in September · · Score: 2, Insightful

With all the trash on TV these days I would guess that if people would pay $2-5 per episode of a TV show with NO commercials then subscription based video might take off. Apple already has the subscription service for music. Why not extend it to TV shows or movies? There are three shows I watch and three my girlfriend watches. I would pay $12-30 per week for commercial free shows legally acquired. That would allow me to get rid of DirecTV. DirecTV is MPEG-4 now for some channels so the quality would be comparable. Most people don't see a quality difference between digital cable, satellite and DVDs. I think this is a great direction for Apple to be heading into. Would I buy one? Sure I would if the video content were interesting and at the right price.

Ummm I don't thing the DOJ is watching our favorite monopoly very closely. Soon there will be a Microsoft option for everything that can be purchased. I can see it now in stores:

Bob: Hey Carla how about these cool Levis?
Carla: Nah I would rather have the MS-Jeans. They have Anti-virus protection I'll never be sick again.

  4. Good Idea - Here is an alternative... on Modular PC Handtop Review · · Score: 1

I have had an idea for a while now about creating a device that is essentially an LCD with a SIMPLE network interface. Think palm with a larger screen and a network connection. This device would be able to provide an X/VNC/RDP connection to a main computer that has tons of processing power. Your wireless network supplies the connection. The device runs an embedded Linux. These would be fairly inexpensive to produce. I have everything but the X/VNC/RDP piece sitting on my workbench now. 9" LCD, 400Mhz Intel Xscale CPU, 802.11B/G wireless. Total cost so far in single quantity $500.

  5. Alternative Solution on IBM Unveils Anti-Spam Services to Stop Spammers · · Score: 1

While the spammers and spyware people think it's cool to install software in holes in Windows. Why doesn't someone use those same holes for good? I know that this has been discussed in the past but hear me out. Use those same holes to install Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, etc. Activate them. True that you are installing software on another persons computer without their consent. But thinking of the internet as an organism spam zombies are cancer that is killing the ability to use some services effectively. Fight back by doing something useful. Stop the problem at the source. Immunize the PC for the people that don't have a clue. Don't bash them for not being as Uber (yeah I know there are supposed to be umlauts over that) as you are.

  7. MPAA & RIAA use these services too... on The MPAA's Lobbying-Fu is Stronger Than Yours · · Score: 1

IANAL but reading through the IL law regarding 720 ILCS 5/16-18, firewalls, SSH & VPNs would all fall into criminal activity. This disturbs me greatly becasue my company "used" to sell those services to IL companies. My attorney advised me not to sell those services to IL companies because of this law. While all we provide are network based services that most corporations (including ALL the RIAA and MPAA members) use on a daily basis for securing networks and traffic with trusted individuals in a company we now have to be VERY careful. How is it that they can use these servcies and not break the law but for the general public to use the same technology it's a Class A Misdemeanor punishable not only by the state but you can also be tried in civil court for the SAME law?!?!? Sounds a lot like double jeapordy to me. But once again IANAL.

Actually a PIC microcontroller is VERY easy to program as you can do it in BASIC. Getting started with them is also VERY inexpensive. You can get the PCBs for a parallel programmer for free off the 'Net and the parts for it from any reputable electronics parts supplier. They also can be powered from the serial port if you want to keep it simple. A PIC can power a number of LEDs with nothing other than a current limiting resister on the ground side of the LED. The PIC microcontroller is about $5-$8 from Reynolds Electronics.
