I've deleted a half-dozen virus-containing emails from my inbox within the last half hour -- which means there are at least 6 people in my company stupid enough to open a.VBS attachment!
The original love letter virus cost millions in lost productivity, because it crashed thousands of (Exchange) mail servers. Also, I lose productivity everytime I reboot, because I have to wait for Norton Virus scan to download new patterns and scan my hard drive. Also, on an older system, the virus scanner interacted with Netware to crash Windows every time it tried to boot up, which cost me several hours of lost work until the IT department finally relented and told me the password to disable the virus scan function!
Interesting to note, however, that all these costs were incurred only on systems running MICROS~1 software... the more interesting question is "How does the cost of virii to Windows users compare to the cost of virii on non-windows users?"
Should buffer-overflow (stack smashing) and root exploits be included in the costs analysis? If not, it seems like the costs to Linux users is zero...
this is another reason why online threats shouldn't be taken to seriously.
Every fascist over-reaction to a perceive threat just increases the chances that somebody innocent will get crucified 'cause somebody else set them up. I'm calling the anonymous tip line right now to report the jerk that just stole my girlfriend; it seems I recall him making some columbine-style threats a while back... and I'm almost certain he actually _owns_ a black trench coat _and_ plays computer games!
Well, let's see... they've already used evil drug trafficers and (ethnic) gangs to justify random traffic stops, checkpoints, illegal search and seizure, and the outlawing of weapons based on appearance... not to mention eavesdropping innocent citizens (can you say Echelon and Carnivore?), so I guess this is just par for the course, isn't it?
... hasn't _everybody_ who has ever purchased anything over the internet used encryption, without knowing it? As well as anyone who's ever checked their bank account online? Do you hink all the data going to and from those ATM machines you use every day is sent in plain text? How about your credit card number when it's verified by a card reader at the mall? Let's face it, if you weren't using encryption on a regular basis, your bank account would be pretty much empty by now, wouldn't it?
Re:I hate to say it, but who gives a FUCK ?

Quake on IPv6

No less than William Gates III (who I normally diagree with vehemently) is on the record as saying 'there is no evidence of consumer demand for an IPv6 offering'.
This from the man who is eagerly awaiting a method of factoring large prime numbers, no less!
I would assert that there is no evidence of consumer demand for 10-digit dialing either, yet here in Oregon (and a few other states) we've been forced to use it.
2) The open-source mantra is "If you see a need, fill it yourself." Get involved in one of the open source projects creating Hebrew word processors and add the.DOC import functionality. (This is supposedly documented somewhere in MSDN; it's basically RTF but it gets embraced and extended with each new version of Word. Still, there shouldn't be too much reverse engineering necessary.) Contribute Hebrew support to Mozilla. Better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
If that's true, then shouldn't virtually all of the WWF wrestlers be arrested? Seems to me we've got 'em all on video threatening to harm/kill others! Could it be that you're missing an important element here called "intent".
"Uh, these games look like they might have been used in a crime, let's take them!"
What the fuck?!? Q3 Arena is now contraband? Let's get something straight here -- you cannot assault someone by going through their modem. You can't even harass someone via email (ever hear of a filter?). Online is absolutely the most benign media for posing and posturing, simply because YOU CAN'T DO ANY REAL HARM as long as you remain online. Where do we send the money to contribute to the false arrest/malicious prosecution lawsuit?
Since near was NOT designed to land on the asteroid, it can only be micro-gravity holding it on the surface...
Has this virus cost anybody money yet? Anybody's email server gone down today? Like most virii, it only affects Windows users...

And a computer game is considered evidence pertaining to precisely what crime?
