You model does not include the time dimension. Yeh sure R&D costs can be absorbed when considering larger volumes - however long R&D cycles can delay when you reach the market.
No redundancy at all. Openh should hopefully be running a bit smoother now that we found (in others machines) some more memory.

Most people may not be able to build the hardware - but they could see how it is done. Those writing software for 'openh' boards would be able to have first hand knowledge of the design.
Knowledge is really what matters at the end of the day.
