This server, which is a dual CPU Athlon box, along with a single CPU athlon box I use for firewalling and a couple Cisco switches runs around 500 watts combined. Where I live, it's about $26.5/month. The bigger problem is cooling, as my central air was not designed to have such a heat load in a bedroom closet, and I have no basement to hide it in since my recent move.

I bought a case from http://www.servercase.com/, a 3Ware RAID Controller and 8 200GB IDE drives. I've got 1400GB of usable space in RAID5. It runs Linux with Samba and NFS. I also use it for a MythTV Backend.

Unfortunatly, once you have all this space, you WILL find a way to use it all and need more. I put this system together about 10 months ago, and it's at 85% capacity now. I'm preparing to build a new server with 12 250GB drives, to have just over 4TB between the 2 systems.

Double the bus width from 32 to 64 bits and you double from 133MB/sec to 266MB/sec

That's absolutly not true. IPv6 info @ Cisco. I quote: "In May 2003, the availability of Cisco IOS 12.3 Mainline that integrates the IPv6 feature set from 12.2(15)T enables production deployment for all Cisco based networks." Obviously routers have it. Linux has it as well, so its certainly not a MS only thing.

The problem with IPv6 isn't software or hardware -- it's politics and money. Theres no benefit to service providers to update their IPv4 setup to do IPv6 because they'd have to find some way to still talk to the "normal" IPv4 internet (because, really, who wants to get on an ISP that isn't on the internet?). Additionally, many many ISP's charge a premium on extra IP addresses. What makes you think that they want to ditch that income so you and I can each address our refrigerator from the supermarket to see how much milk is left?

So what? Now I've got 1.4TB (at least I don't lose all/part of my data if the drive fails, unlike this guy). I've only used maybe 10% of that. I've moved all the Videos, mp3s, ISOs, and any other random garbages off all the other pc's in the house to it.

I'd call it a waste, but its too damn cool.

This is exactly what I setup at the university I admin. In fact, it's more than heavily firewalled. The "Virus VLAN" has a sole linux box with DHCP, DNS and Apache. It's configured so once they're on the new vlan, the DHCP server gives them a new ip address, and their default gateway and dns server are both set to the linux box. It in turn resolves every DNS query with the IP of said Linux box. So no matter where they try to browse, they hit the page that has AV software, firewall software, patches and the individual blaster and welchia removal tools. It's been a total timesaver, as now 95% of the infections no one has to go out to the room and work on it.

If you're looking for support (which is what I'm assuming your reason for going with Enterprise server is), then either pay for Advance Server or go with a different cheaper distribution and put the money you saved into someone that can search Google and find out how to make "RH only" stuff work on Debian or something.

We run oracle (both 8 and 9) on Debian, as well as most of our internet infrastructure (with the exception of proprietary programs that are stuck on Win2K for the time being). Most of the vendors of Linux based apps that we have worked with are willing to provide support even with Debian being the distro we chose (and then the ones that have complained, I've just called for another technician that was more distro-agnostic and gotten right through).

I did finally convince my boss to order me a new machine with 2 18" LCD's at work after finding out how much less eye strain I had and how much better I just felt overall after using them for long sessions at home.
