IStockPhotos license is not similar to GPL. It prohibits redistribution of pictures, among many other things.

    From their licence:

It is prohibited to rent, transfer, distribute or grant any rights in the software, the images contained within the archive and/or the accompanying documentation in any form to any person without the written consent of Webcore Labs Inc., prior to the act.

Well, seems like they were selling the online versions for 5 pounds or so at one point. They are not at the mentioned site anymore though.

Originally they were released for free on the net. There is still some site that has the first four books available online.

Similarly, I have seen a lot of Douglas Adams stuff online, but I don't know if he knows about it. However, I hope he approves

He released the electronic version of "Mostly Harmless" himself. I remember reading it on my Atari long ago :-)
As for the others, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if he released them too.

I object to the "Buy more stuff and you'll be happy!!" message that's hammered into my brain without pause.

I couldn't agree more. Ads are basically trying to manipulate people to do something that they wouldn't be doing otherwise. I find manipulation like this offensive. They also provide very little benefit for the victims (most ads are very poorly targeted), and it annoys people and wastes their time by distracting them.

So the net value of ads is negative for the people that are forced to watch them.
