How can this person make any sort of suggestions regarding "modularity" or "namespace pollution" or "Free Software" or "shitty MMX instructions" when he DOESN'T EVEN PROGRAM, which also means he DOESN'T CONTRIBUTE?
This applies to everyone on slashdot, not just Rowan. Everybody gets this holier-than-thou attitude when they manage to configure Linux, even when they use the clicky-clicky interface of something like Redhat. "I configured ISDN, therefore I am a hacker. You, Mr. Corporation, make your software open source." Have any of you ever even LOOKED at the kernel source? (I have, and I've even made some changes, but that's somewhat irrelevant.)
If you want something changed, CHANGE IT. Don't write an essay telling everyone how they need to write software for you. Don't complain about how bad the documentation is: everyone else figured it out with the same documents. Once you figure it out, FIX THE DOCUMENTATION, don't write an essay about how bad the documentation is! This also pertains to ESR, whom I have some respect for, but who also manages to not actually write anything.
Jon Katz writes essays about how we're part of the information revolution. WHAT PART DO YOU, MR. KATZ, SUPPLY? If you want to contribute with words, at least say something that hasn't been said THOUSANDS of times before.
I'm talking about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY here. Essays like these really disgust me.
Of course, the essay itself is pure drivel. We have "(paraphrase)KDE doesn't support themes, therefore it isn't configurable, and btw, it sucks." I don't need to point out the flaw in that "logic". (I get the impression that KDE is/was more advanced, with more software available, than GNOME. I've only used either for about 5 minutes, but again, that's irrelevant.)
The entire WWWOFFLE section is entirely pointless. I won't waste further words on it.
"Modularity IS ABOUT EVERYTHING BUT duplicating work." In the same breath, though, "(paraphrase)KDE is great because you can embed data from other programs." Have you heard of Object Linking and Embedding(OLE), a Microsoft "technology" so old they aren't using it anymore?
I can't criticize the English, because my German ist nicht so gut. Even if the English/grammar were perfect, though, this would be an awful essay, with poor organization, because all Rowan does is whine. Not only does he not offer solutions, but he isn't in a position to implement solutions, anyway.
--Evan, who is disgusted by the self-righteous "community", and is considering HURD just to avoid the onslaught of lusers.
P.S. Excuse the yelling, this really makes me upset.
