According to the Loki web site, the wholesale price of the Windows and Linux versions of Civilization: Call to Power are the same, but Loki has no control over retailers' pricing and expects the Windows version to be sold for less by some retailers. I was pleased to see this was not the case at Beyond, which is selling the Linux version for $46.45 and the Windows version for $48.95. The downside is that the Windows version is shipped right away while the Linux version takes up to 2 weeks.

A similar thing happened with Michael Moore's show, The Awful Truth, easily the most outrageous show on American television. The show is sponsored by the BBC and shown on the Bravo cable network. I recommend it to all slashdotters.
Here's an excerpt from Moore's latest email newsletter, entitled "The missing four minutes from this Sunday's Awful Truth":
After a number of discussions with the Bravo network regarding this Sunday's show, the network has decided to censor and remove a four-minute piece from "The Awful Truth" entitled, "Teen Sniper School." While we have a deep respect for the people at Bravo (they have treated our show with the kind of support independent filmmakers and TV producers usually can only dream of), we disagree with their decision to pull the segment.
"Teen Sniper School" is one of the most biting and uncomfortable pieces of satire we have produced. It takes the current environment of easy access to guns by children of all ages to its logical extreme -- why not just arm all the kids and teach them to be better shots as part of the school curriculum?
We shot this segment five months before the tragedy at Columbine High School. Bravo is correct in its feeling that viewing "Teen Sniper School" in the aftermath of the Littleton, Colorado, incident is not an easy thing to do. We believe, though, that one of the main functions of satire is to confront the uncomfortable issues. Satire is not supposed to be the kind of Comedy Lite you can find on every other channel. Satire assumes the audience has a brain. Good satire has you laughing so you don't start crying -- and, in the end, maybe it gets you thinking about just what the #@*& is going on in this strange world...
Don't be upset with Bravo; they're the ones with the guts to air this stuff and they have told me that they hope to air "Teen Sniper School" at some later date when they feel an appropriate time has passed since the Columbine tragedy.
I wonder if British viewers will post the missing four minutes. (I'm disappointed that Michael Moore didn't.)
He addressed this point indirectly at the end of his acceptance speech. (I was there.) He told us to remember that it is better not to make money from software patents than to be able to give it away in prizes, as much as he appreciated the money.
Microsoft did not choose the award winner. The decision was made by the past winners of the award. This implies that RMS will have an influence in future years.
I'd encourage people who like Shel Silverstein to look at Jeanne Steig's works. My favorite is her Old Testament Made Easy, illustrated by her cartoonist husband, William Steig (also a great children's book writer). Here's her poem about the Flood:
Said God, "This contemptible race
Had proved itself shockingly base. Such rascals! Confound them, I fear I must drown them. They're sinning all over the place.
"You, Noah, deserve to be saved. For you're not even mildly depraved. Build an ark. Make it huge, To withstand the deluge, Lest you sink to a watery grave."
Then Noah (his family, too) Assembled an unabridged zoo. "What a stench!" Noah cried. Hanging over the side. "Every one of them needs a shampoo."
Forty days, forty nights, how it poured! They were itchy, rheumatic, and bored. But they weathered the flood, And debarked in the mud. "Last one off is a slug!" said the Lord.
Unfortunately, this book is out of print, but her Handful of Beans: Six Fairy Tales is still available.
I know someone who works at a United States software distribution company that innocently started using the domain name "usadist.com". They very quickly changed names once they realized the second meaning.:-)
I would give money for a statue, but something I would like even more (and give more money to) would be to campaign for the British government to posthumously rehabilitate him. The way they treated him was shameful. I encourage people to visit the Alan Turing Web Page.
Women have been leaving CS at a faster rate than men. According to the ACM, the percentage of CS bachelor's degrees going to women dropped from 37.1% in 1984 to 28.4% in 1995. For more information, see The Incredible Shrinking Pipeline by Tracy Camp.
A cursory review of the latest NSF data suggests that the percentage of bachelor's degrees in engineering going to women has been holding relatively steady. (According to the NSF, CS is a mathematical science, not an engineering field.)
I teach computer science at Mills College, the first women's college to offer a computer science major. I've also written far too much on this subject.
