Seems to me like Whitey-Barbie was more appealing to the youngsters because Barbie is always white on the commercials and on the merchandise/branding.
When Barbie is all of the sudden black, she must seem to a child to be some sort of off-barbie toywise. Sort of like a green C3P0.
