  1. What's a recommendation for a web server distro? on Review/Overview of Lightweight Linux Distros · · Score: 1

What if I only want to run Apache (well, let's future-proof that statement and say a full LAMP stack)? Keeping in mind the need to patch regularly to avoid security problems (and thus having access to a yum or apt equivalent; not source code), what's a lightweight distro you folks would recommend? I would want to run this in a VM, but I don't think that imposes any additional requirements.

  2. Not trying to start a flame war (honest)... on Enlightenment DR17 On the Linux Desktop · · Score: 0, Flamebait

What does this window manager do that Mac OS X's doesn't? It seems that it has copied the dock straight from that, and window transparency is already well supported on the Mac as well. I ask not because I'm trying to trumpet OS X; I'm trying to understand whether there's real innovation here, or whether this is being touted only because it's more advanced than Gnome/KDE.

  3. Look at Wired's story on DreamWorks Animation on Creating a High-Tech Meeting/Conference Room? · · Score: 1
The latest issue of Wired has a story on how Dreamworks is using such technology. They don't go into details, but it's a good description of their feature set.

My advice to you: do what any good coder does. First nail down your requirements (the Wired article may be a good starting point), and then evaluate any proposed solutions against your requirements. Otherwise, you'll act like a kid in a candy store, and not get anywhere.

Not only that, this is "news for nerds." Hard-code baseball junkies are nerds in a very real way: watch them recite statistics like automatons, and you'll see what I mean. :) P.S. I love baseball, so this is really a self-deprecating comment.

  5. Re:I agree with Kerry & Clinton? on Senators Clinton and Kerry Submit Open Voting Bill · · Score: 1

As many /.'ers have noted, multiple bills have already been floated that require paper verification and source code visibility. The interesting part of this bill is requiring Election Day to be a federal holiday. Democrats complain constantly about how the lack of this affects them more than it affects the Republicans (since, presumably, all the blue-collar people in the US want to vote Democrat and don't necessarily get the opportunity to because of work requirements). Republicans have constantly blocked such attempts in the past, lending credence to the Democrat argument. Given we're in the era of a Republican-controlled government, the chances of this bill exiting committee review are exactly zero.

Hello! Given your praise of Ron Livingstone, you would be happy to know that he's been getting some good work. He was on the superb miniseries that HBO produced based on Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers." He also joined (and still may be on; haven't checked recently) ABC's "The Practice."

  7. Does this work for my Archos? on Rockbox Replaces Archos Firmware · · Score: 1

Does anyone know if this will work for the Archos 5000? Also, is this the only utility that allows Archos devices to be accessed by Linux, or are there other programs out there?
